Reviewing expectations is a tool that helps you confirm students know what is expected of them, reminds the students what they should be focusing on, and allows the students to take ownership and responsibly of other own actions. It is simply just reviewing what expectations are before an activity or group work assignment. It helps students be on task during the task and maximize time for student learning.
The Learning Pit is a tool that clarifies to students that in order to experience deep learning, it will be difficult and it is okay to struggle. It is a picture that gives students a visual of how learning happens. They will learn that it is okay to fail, struggle, and have to work at a new skill before fully understanding and succeeding.
The kindness chain is a way to represent all of the kindness the students have done throughout the year. Writing down all of the kindness the has spread in the classroom builds that community in the classroom as well as supports the spread of kindness.
Three before me is all about students being able to independently ask three peers within the classroom Before going to ask their teacher. students may use the strategy when asking for help in repeating directions as well as other general questions that they may have before confronting the teacher.
The tool is a sign that has two sides. On one side of the sign, it is green and the other side is red. It is helpful for students to decide when it is best for them to take a break if they need one.
When a task needs to be done, count down from a reasonable number, once the counter reaches zero, pick the student’s spirits up by congratulating them and thanking them for their cooperation.
Signal interference is one of those tools that is a non-verbal way to correct your students when they are doing an appropriate behavior within your classroom. This tool does not cause any distractions towards other students and it is meant to only target one or multiple specific students who are having difficulty that need to be corrected. What’s great about the strategy is that peers around them will not be distracted by this corrective tool.
Silent Thumbs Up is a method for communicating whether or not students have completed a task or assignment. It is a great way to allow students to communicate without disturbing others by talking.
Sticker Check-In is helpful for understanding how students are feeling through the use of stickers and a chart. It allows teachers to see where their students are at mentally and emotionally so that decisions can be made accordingly.
The Syllable Walk is a tool to use when you are releasing students back to their seats. This tool will be a fun and interactive way for students to head back to their seats without causing a major disruption. And it’s also a great learning tool for students in remembering vocabulary words.
