Happy Go Home Note

Recognition for good behavior is crucial to reinforcing the desired behavior, especially if a student often misbehaves. This tool is used on students that need that special attention when they’ve done something good. This will begin to motivate them internally and externally to behave better.

Throughout the school year the teacher will know which students have trouble staying on task, listening to direction, or being respectful to the class and others. This tool allows the teacher to see the good in those students, even if it is not there often. When the student does something good, more so what they are supposed to do, the teacher will fill out the Happy Go Home Note. At the end of the day the teacher will talk to the student one-on-one about how the teacher appreciates that she/he, for example was quiet in the hallway and that the teacher knows how difficult it is for them to be quiet in the hallway but today that goal was accomplished. Then the teacher will begin to show the student the Happy Go Home Note and say something along the lines of “I am so proud of you and I want you to show this to your parents so they can be proud of you too”. This is going to make the student feel proud for doing the good behavior and will be a helpful tool to reinforce said behavior.

This tool belongs in the Supportive Phase because the teacher is supporting the good behavior that comes from those students that don't often show good behavior. This phase is the most appropriate because the student needs support in being shown/ told what good behavior looks like as they may have never known that the behavior they are doing is not accepted in the classroom. This could be used in the Corrective Phase only if the student that is misbehaving started the year off behaving properly and then during the school year began to misbehave. If this happens then the teacher can use this tool to correct the behavior.
This fits best in the Teacher Directed phase because the teacher is in control of who gets the Happy Go Home Note and what is written on it. Not every student is going to get one of these notes, it's mostly for the student that have a problem with behaving respectfully in their school and need reinforcement from the teacher and recognition from their parents. This tool also relates to the Collaborative phase when the teacher talks to the student one-on-one about why they are getting the note and how they can continue to have good behavior like they did that day.
