Write the Room

Student Contributor: J. Hudson
This tool helps student get up and move around while also reviewing what they have learned. The students will walk around the room looking for words then use those words to create a sentence.

The teacher will put vocabulary words around the room that will relate to what the students are learning. The teacher can place the words on walls, tables, anywhere that can be seen by students. This can be used for any subject. The student will then take a journal, or a special worksheet designed for this assignment and they will walk around the room looking for the words. Once they find one of the words, they will use it in sentence. They will write their sentence down on their paper and then look for the next word. This will help students who cannot sit for long periods of time, but it doesn’t take away from their learning it adds to it.

I said that this tool belongs to the preventative phase. I said this because some students will begin to misbehave if they get bored or they are sitting for long periods of time. This tool will get the students moving before this behavior ever occurs. I said that this is student centered because the student will learn how to be in charge of their own behavior. If they are sitting and they can feel their selves getting restless then they can silently get up and start doing the activity on their own. The teacher does not need to tell them when to do this because the students know themselves best. I think this could also connect to the supportive phase because it will continue to support students throughout their learning.
