Classroom Set-Up

The classroom set-up is an important tool to have knowledge of because we rely so much on our room. We start thinking about room set-up before the school year begins, and it is where we spent so much of our time. The room should be reflective of a safe place that promotes critical thinking, as well as proving students with everything they need to be successful in school. The classroom is the heart of our learning.

Knowledge and research is key when using the classroom set-up tool. In order to know how to make your classroom successful, you need to know what to include. Clutter should be absent from the room. Clean, neat lines should be a characteristic of the room staying uncluttered. Proper colors should be chosen to prevent anxiety and increase thinking. Colors can include but are not limited to: salmon, beige, tan, taupe, light yellow, forest green, sky/light blues. Texture should be thought on when choosing a carpet, blankets, etc. When someone walks into your classroom, they should be able to know what you are learning. The class does not need to be bombarded with information plastered all around the room, the students do not use those posters or anchor charts that never leave the wall.

This tool relates directly to the supportive phase because as a classroom community, you are working with your students to support them with their needs. The classroom set-up can involve an Australia, organization of furniture/carpet/desks, flexible seating, display of procedures or life skills. The conversation with your students about the classroom will directly relate into the environment that develops, discussing procedures, movement, lessons, etc. In my opinion, the classroom set-up is a highly important focus to make at the beginning of the year with your students.
