Chair Rubber Bands

Student Contributor: M. Krogh
Chair rubber bands are thick rubber bands that go around the front two legs of a chair. The rubber band allows students to fidget with their feet by kicking or bouncing the band on their chairs.

This tool can be used with all students and is very easy to use. You simply put the rubber band on the legs of the chair and you’re good to go! Students will be able to focus on learning when they are moving their legs. Students who have trouble sitting still or in their chair in general can benefit from chair rubber bands. This tool is very quiet and won’t create a distraction for other learners. They are also out of sight since they are low to the ground. Students should have the choice if they want to use a band or not.

I placed chair rubber bands in the supportive phase because that is where they fit best. This tool will be used during learning and that is a part of the supportive phase. Since the bands are already on the chairs before learning it can be a part of the preventative phase. When the chair rubber bands are actually being used the student is learning and that is the supportive phase. This could also be used in the corrective phase when a student is distracted or need to move while learning and don’t have one on their chair. This is collaborative and student-directed because the students are using the band but the teacher will provide it.
