This tool is essentially a student-lead bulletin board. Where students post personal work or art that they wish to share with their peers and the teacher on, “The Fridge.”
This tool is something that I think is best introduced like most things at the beginning of the year. Students can even help build the Fridge and talk about what kind of work they would like to display up on the Fridge. Many of the resources that used to derive this idea also included terms of phrase like “ Fridge worthy work”. Although we did not utilize this type of spin on our Fridge I think that there is a lot of value in having students put up things they believe should be on display in the classroom on the Fridge. It should noted that in my setting we had our Fridge inside our classroom but I don’t see a reason you couldn’t put this out in the hallway as your bulletin board there instead.
I think that this tool belongs in the Preventative phase. Although I could also see the argument for the supportive phase. I however am picking the preventive phase for what my mentor and I used the Fridge for. I think that if you were to put the "Fridge worthy work" spin on this tool that then it would fall into the Supportive phase. I think that this will really help students feel safe and welcome into your classroom as well as relating it to home life since it is based off of a fridge that students would likely have at home. This tool is modeled by the instructor at the beginning of the year then monitored by the students so I would put this somewhere in between Collaborative and Student Directed.
