Hello EWU community,
I am Liya, Social Sciences Librarian and Assistant Professor at the JFK Library. I received my Ph.D. in Library and Information Science from the University of South Carolina in 2016. My doctoral research focused on the impact of museum experience on learning and socialization of children with special needs. My current scholarly agenda spans the areas of student information behavior and library instruction, student learning outcome assessment, and the value of academic libraries. I am interested in qualitative research methods used to explore the impact of academic libraries on students success and retention.
One of my current interests is to explore the application of the SCALE-UP Classroom concept in academic libraries. The SCALE-UP pedagogy is an effective means to design interactive and collaborative classroom settings inspired by guided inquiry-based instruction. I aspire to investigate and practice active learning principles to create a student-centered learning environment in library instruction.
Prior to starting my doctoral program at USC, I had a stint as the Government Information Librarian at Mercer University Libraries where I provided research support services in a wide range of social science disciplines. Earlier in my career, I earned an M.Ed. degree from the University of North Carolina at Wilmington.
I have extensive teaching experience on both the undergraduate and graduate levels. My goal in working with students is always to foster a new generation of information-literate leaders and critical thinkers able to succeed in the demanding 21-st century information universe.
I am excited to be your Social Sciences Librarian and look forward to working with each and every one of you!
