Activities and Links

The activities and links listed below are intended to be resources for S-STEM Scholars and other STEM majors at EWU.

June 15: Once again, several of our scholars are receiving awards at the CSTEM Awards Ceremony!

March: All scholars complete their exit interviews with Dr. Joyner-Matos as grant support ends in winter quarter.

February 20 and 21: Our final cohort will complete their Information Literacy workshop with Marissa Mourer, our STEM Librarian.

January 18: Our final professional development activity – a Biology department seminar with Kat Hall, Conservation and Education Director at The Lands Council and Brian Walker, who has worked for The Lands Council and for the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service. The 2 pm seminar will be followed by a Q/A session and a networking event.

November/December: We completed our faculty mentoring meetings.

October 31st: Community outreach opportunity as Harvest Fest visits the Science Building for the first time for an afternoon of Spooky Science.

October 17 – 18: Many of our partners are on campus for the Science and Technology Career Fair and Mixer!

October 8: Career Services workshop to prepare for the Career Fair. Both cohorts together.

Quite a few of our scholars are earning awards at the CSTEM Awards Ceremony on Friday, June 15th. See you there!

On May 31st we are holding our S-STEM Field Day. Middle and high school students will spend the afternoon on campus, rotating through a series of hands-on STEM activities; S-STEM Scholars will help facilitate the activities. The students will do robotics, physics, chemistry, and microbiology.

On Monday, May 7th we are holding an employer panel from 2 – 3:30 pm in Science 137 with Jubilant HollisterStier and Paw Print Genetics.

In April our scholars will be working with middle and high school students in the Cheney School District, spending an afternoon with the kids who participate in the Prime Time Mentoring program.

Several scholars are presenting their research at NCUR. Good luck! Remember to submit abstracts for the EWU Student Research and Creative Works Symposium.

All scholars will be attending the FUSE Career Fair on March 1st, from 2 – 6 pm at the Spokane Convention Center. See FUSE for details.

November: This month, Cohort 3 will have a Career Services workshop and Cohort 4 will have an Information Literacy workshop.

October: This month we are meeting the new cohort of S-STEM scholars and setting the schedule for the year. We encourage all S-STEM Scholars to attend the on-campus STEM Career Fair on Thursday October 26th.

May community engagement: Three community engagement activities are occurring this month (busy times!). Some scholars are volunteering for EWU Biology booths at Cheney Mayfest, some scholars are volunteering with the Communities in Schools program in Cheney middle schools, and most scholars are participating in the S-STEM Field Day activity, in which Cheney high school students visit EWU campus.

May activity: First-year scholars in Cohort 3 are meeting with Career Services

March activity: Scholars participated in the FUSE Career Fair at the Spokane Convention Center.

January activity: Scholars are meeting with their S-STEM faculty mentors to discuss post-graduation or summer 2017 opportunities.

November/December activities: Second-year scholars in Cohort 2 are meeting with Career Services; first-year scholars in Cohort 3 are completing the Information Literacy/Library Resources workshop.

October activity: Friday, October 28th, Biology Department Seminar (Science 137) will be given by Bruce Williams from GeoEngineers, Inc. His talk is entitled, “Environmental response to a gasoline spill adjacent to the Sanpoil River.” The seminar is at 2 pm, followed by a Q/A session for S-STEM scholars and other students at 3 pm.

June activity: Thursday, June 2nd will be the Employer Panel. Professionals from GenPrimeJubilant HollisterStier and Terraqua Environmental Consulting will be holding a panel presentation and Q/A session about employment at their companies. Science 137, 3:00 – 4:30 pm.

May activity: Wednesday, May 25th will be the STEM field day at EWU. High school students from Cheney will be coming to campus. Stay tuned for details!

April activity: We are tentatively scheduling a panel with several regional employers and our Cohort 2 will do a career services workshop. More details soon!

February/March activity: We are working with junior high and high school students in Cheney schools in collaboration with the Office of Community Engagement.

December activity: Please meet with your S-STEM faculty mentor, and study for finals!

November activities: Cohort 1 will attend a workshop with Career Services; Cohort 2 will attend the Library/Information Literacy workshop.

October activity: Biology department seminar with Dr. Paul Yancey from Whitman College at 2 pm, followed by S-STEM professional development activity at 3 pm.

June activity: Professional development field trip to GenPrime, a biotech company started by an EWU alumnus! Friday, June 5th.

May activity: Let’s welcome the new S-STEM recipients (soon to be selected)!

April activity: Volunteer at NCUR!

March activity: Professional development field trip to the Spokane County Water Resources Center with interactions with WRC staff, CH2M Hill staff, and Department of Ecology Staff. Friday, March 13th.

February activity: The Professional Skills workshop (hosted by the Career Services Center) is tentatively scheduled for the afternoon of Friday, February 20th.

January activity: Our STEM outreach event to Cheney High School is on Wednesday, January 16th.

December activity: Don’t forget to submit your STEM surveys – you can put them in the outgoing mail in 258 Science.

November activity: We will see you Friday, November 21st at Cheney Lanes/Rosa’s Pizza for a friendly bowling competition between scholars and mentors and some yummy pizza! See you there shortly after 3 pm. Cheney Lanes has a Facebook page rather than a website – go there for details/directions.

October activity: The two-part Library Services and Information Literacy workshop will occur on Wednesday the 15th and Wednesday the 22nd at 10 and 11 am, respectively, in the JFK Library.
