Women Writing in Full Color

April 21, 2023 @ 7:00 pm - 8:00 pm

Join writers CMarie Fuhrman, Toni Jensen, and Jane Wong as they celebrate and interrogate their individuality and identity against the backdrop of history, expectations, and reality. Their poetry and prose challenge reader’s expectations and examine the impact of race and culture on their lives and writing. Jensen explores gun violence, land, and the lives of Indigenous women in her memoir-in-essays, Carry. Wong wrestles with Chinese immigrant life in the US and explores her own identity in both her poetry collection and her forthcoming memoir Meet Me Tonight in Atlantic City, and Furhman, the 2021-2023 Idaho Writer in Residence and author of Camped Beneath the Dam, meditates on land and body while bearing witness to the challenges faced by underrepresented voices. Fuhrman, Jensen, and Wong will each give a reading of their own work and discuss how their backgrounds and identities influence and inform their writing. The work of these writers is all celebrated in Nonwhite and Woman: 131 Micro Essays on Being in the World, an anthology which “. . . celebrates how women of color live and thrive in the world, and how they make their lives their own.” The anthology (along with all authors’ books) will be available for purchase at the event via Auntie’s Bookstore. We would like to thank Spokane Public Library for their partnership.

This event is free and open to the public, no ticket is required.
