How to Start a Poem: A Craft Class with Ada Limón

April 21, 2023 @ 1:30 pm - 3:30 pm

Making Something from Nothing: How to Start a Poem with Ada Limón

Join us for an extremely rare and exciting opportunity to learn how to create a poem from scratch in this intimate craft class taught by the current US Poet Laureate Ada Limón. Ada’s role as Poet Laureate is to “raise the national consciousness to a greater appreciation of the reading and writing of poetry.” In this class, which can be attended by poets at any stage of their writing career, Ada will address the daunting task of beginning a poem with a blank page—how do you find inspiration? How do you know what you want to say? How do you create emotionally charged imagery that will make readers want to return to your poetry again and again? Carla Hayden, Librarian of Congress, who appoints the poet laureate, said that “Ada’s accessible, engaging poems ground us in where we are and who we share our world with. They speak of intimate truths, of the beauty and heartbreak that is living, in ways that help us move forward.” Don’t miss this incredible opportunity to spend two hours learning about poetry from our US Poet Laureate and festival headliner Ada Limón!

This craft class is ticketed ($45 plus fees) and capped at 50 attendees. Purchase your ticket here! ***This event has sold out! Thank you to everyone who has purchased tickets!***

*This class is located in Events A on the first floor of the Spokane Central Library.
