Career & Technical Education
Initial CTE Teaching Certification

Online Graduate Education Programs

The Career and Technical initial Teaching certification allows you to teach in your business and industry area of expertise. Candidates must have 6,000 hours of experience (2,000 of which can be from current teaching) in your business and industry area of expertise over the last 10 years. This is a Plan 2 route to CTE certification, candidates will be eligible to teach certain subjects based on their business and industry experience. The State of Washington reviews candidate experience and hours to determine accepted teaching subjects based on V-Codes which can be reviewed HERE.
Eastern Washington University offers two graduate online accelerated options for the Career & Technical Education program:

Master of Education
+ Initial CTE Teaching Certification

The Master of Education program is a full Master’s degree, designed for candidates who do not currently hold an initial CTE Certification and wish to be certificated in Career & Technical Education and want to earn their master’s degree.

Initial CTE Teaching Certification certificate only

The Graduate Certificate is a shorter, graduate level program, designed for candidates who do not currently hold an initial CTE Certification and wish to be certificated in Career & Technical Education.

Candidates who wish to return to complete the full masters degree at a later time must do so within 6 years, before coursework expires.

Sequence of Courses

The Sequence of Courses is a document that serves to outline the order in which courses are offered and can be completed.

In most cases there is a choice between two courses per session/6-weeks or one course per session/6-weeks. Students can customize their sequence based on personal needs, schedules, work, etc.

Our Master’s programs are offered in our online accelerated format. We take a traditional quarter and split it in half. We run two six-week sessions per quarter, with the exception of summer quarter.

There is no particular order you need to take the courses except for the internships, portfolio, and comp exam (if taking full MEd). Those should all be taken towards the end of your program.

The portfolio and comp exam (if taking full MEd) will be the very last classes you take.

You have the option of taking two classes per six-week session or you can take one class per six-week session. We do not advise taking more than two classes per six-week session as those six weeks go by fast.

Session 1 course sections are A01-A09. Session 2 course sections are A50-A59. Most courses are offered twice per year.

If applying for Financial Aid, please register for sessions 1 and 2 at the same time.

Program & University Resources

It is important for students to review the dates and deadlines for the Online Accelerated program as they are different from posted university dates and deadlines. Deadlines for the Online Accelerated program are extremely strict and exceptions are not made.
The textbook list shows texts required for all courses in your program. This list will be updated as new book information becomes available.
An online master’s student has full access to Eastern Washington University resources.

Internship

Internships provide an opportunity for professional growth. The internships meet the Eastern Washington University program requirements for offering opportunities for experiential learning. The hope is the internship may be a steppingstone for new opportunities and a potential revitalization of a current career.
Before Your Internship
  1. Internship Information – Internship location must be identified by student.
    1. EWU does not place students in internship locations.
    2. Must do an internship in a CTE classroom w/ a certified CTE instructor
    3. In addition to the work you complete at your internship location, there is an internship course with additional readings and assignments.
  1. Internship Enrollment Courses – Students will enroll in two separate internship courses in two separate six-week sessions. You must complete Internship I before Internship II. Each internship accounts for 60 hours of working with students, reading, writing/reflecting, meetings, interviews, actual work on topic, and assignments in Canvas. The internship course numbers are as follows:

CTED 611 – Internship I    2 credits
CTED 612 – Internship II   2 credits

  1. Internship Application Process
    1. Once you have decided upon your internship location, must complete the following:

Portfolio

CTED 613 – This course is designed for candidates to assemble a portfolio of work from graduate education courses to demonstrate the candidate has met program outcomes. Candidates will identify written assignments from their courses to revise. Candidates are also required to explain, through a reflection, how these written assignments align with program outcomes.

Comprehensive Exam

The Comprehensive Exam is only required for students in the full MEd Program.
CTED 614 – The purpose of the Comprehensive Examination is to assess knowledge and understanding of specified core courses and evaluate whether students are academically prepared for their role in education. The Comprehensive Examination requires students to demonstrate the ability to synthesize knowledge gained from courses in the Master of Education degree program and write an academically appropriate response.
This exam consists of three (3) academic papers to be submitted during weeks 2, 3, and 4 during a 6-week session. Students will receive one question each week and have one week to complete each paper. Questions are not made available until the time of the exam.
The expectation for writing is 12-15 pages per question (not including the title and reference pages). Any writing over 15 pages will not be read.  The expectation is a scholarly writing piece, using clear, concise words, with correct use of academic language, and APA citations (including a reference page).
