Master in Teaching (MIT)
Secondary Major
This program provides a Master of Education as well as a residency teaching certificate in grades 5-12 in Washington State. This program is recommended for candidates who hold a Bachelor’s degree in an area other than education, who are interested in entering the teaching profession.
Endorsements are included in this program. If an endorsement is pursued, it is recommended that a candidate complete the associated coursework before beginning the MIT program. Endorsements are included in a teacher’s licensure to denote which subjects and grade levels they are qualified to teach. A list of endorsements EWU offers can be found HERE.
Preadmissions Testing
The following must be completed for certification and the majority must be finished before admission to the MIT program:
- Prior to admission applicants must take the WEST-B (Washington Educators Skills Test-Basic) or an approved alternative (SAT or ACT).
- If SAT or ACT was taken, based on test date, you may be required to complete one or more sections of the West-B test. To determine testing requirements, please visit the EWU Certification webpage and click on Basic Skills Testing.
If you have questions regarding pre-admission testing requirements, please contact educgrad@ewu.edu.
Secondary Coursework
The path to Secondary Certification follows a cohort model. Coursework is completed in a designated sequence. Candidates must pass the WEST-E before they can begin student teaching.
