Learn about the Successful Stuttering Management Program (SSMP)

The Successful Stuttering Management Program is an intensive stuttering treatment program for adolescent and adult stutterers held in the summer.

  • Designed to teach the stutterer to manage and control stuttering and to manage the emotional rxesponse to stuttering
  • Staff includes Certified Speech-Language Pathologists, Fluency Specialist and graduates of the Successful Stuttering Management program who assist as mentors

Facts About Stuttering

  • Over three million Americans stutter
  • Stuttering affects three to four times as many males as females
  • Approximately 5 percent of all children go through a period of stuttering that lasts six months or more. Three-quarters of those will recover by late childhood, leaving about 1% with a long-term problem.
  • Exciting new research in the areas of genetics, neurophysiology, child development, and family dynamics of stuttering. As a result we have made tremendous progress in the prevention of stuttering in young children.
  • Studies show that people who stutter are as intelligent and as well-adjusted as those who don’t.
  • People who stutter are self-conscious about their stuttering and often let the disability determine the vocation they choose.
  • There are no instant miracle cures for stuttering.
  • Stuttering becomes an increasingly formidable problem in the teen years.
  • Many famous people stuttered or stutter: Winston Churchill, Marilyn Monroe, Carly Siimon, James Earl Jones, Ken Venturi, John Updike, Lewis Carroll, Annie Glenn, Frank Wolf, Bob Love, John Stossel, Bill Walton, King George VI, Emily Blunt, and Ed Sheeran all stuttered and overcame their problem.

Communication Sciences and Disorders  – Riverpoint Campus, in Spokane

The Department of Communication Sciences and Disorders offers three programs: an undergraduate program leading to the Bachelor of Arts degree, a graduate program leading to the Master of Science degree, and a post-baccalaureate program that allows individuals with bachelor’s degrees in other disciplines to prepare for graduate study in Communication Sciences and Disorders. We are located in the SIERR Building on the Riverpoint Campus in downtown Spokane, WA.
