Internship Definition
Throughout this webpage, ‘internship’ refers to a learning experience in which a student works in an outside setting (e.g. local business, hospital, clinic, school, etc.) as part of their academic program. An internship may also be referred to as a ‘clinical’, ‘practicum’, or ‘field study’.
No matter what the experience is called, the qualifying factors are that a student is:
- enrolled in an EWU academic program that includes the ‘internship’ as part of the requirements to complete the program,
- present in a working environment, and,
- participating in this internship with the knowledge, consent and approval of the EWU faculty/department.
Intern Insurance – Professional Liability and Medical Malpractice
EWU students who are participating in an internship, practicum, clinical, field study, or similar activity may be required to have Professional Liability insurance. This insurance helps protect students against liability claims that may arise out of their internship activities.
Notes about Internship Insurance:
- To be covered by this insurance, being registered in a course is not always required. In the strictest terms, any student who is doing an internship as part of their academic program (and approved by EWU faculty) is an EWU intern and is covered by the insurance. Their specific course enrollment status at the time is incidental.
- If a student is performing services and those hours count toward their academic requirements, then the student is performing services within their academic program. It does not matter if the student is performing those services during an academic break, so long as the services/hours will count toward their academic requirements and so long as the faculty/department concur.
- Conversely, any activities a student may be doing that are not part of their actual academic program requirements are not covered by EWU insurance (e.g. a student who wants to volunteer to get additional experience at their internship site).
Paying for Internship Insurance
Most Internship Insurance charges are collected through a course fee. EWU uses separate course fees as a means to recover insurance premiums in a fair and equitable manner. These are separate from any other course fee and are implemented and managed by Student Financial Services.
Notes about insurance costs and payment:
- Course fee amounts vary but are designed to equate to approximately $18 per student for the academic year. The current internship insurance fees report is here: EWU Student Internship Insurance Fees
- In rare circumstances, a student may be directed to purchase this insurance separately through the EWU Marketplace. If your academic department instructs you to do this, you may purchase the insurance here: https://secure.touchnet.net/C20347_ustores/web/store_main.jsp?STOREID=25
- Questions or concerns should be directed to the Risk Manager at (509) 359-6618 or email to: riskmanager@ewu.edu.

Specialized Proof of Insurance

Incidents / Claims
Faculty and Academic Departments must immediately report incidents related to a student’s internship to the University Risk Manager at 509-359-6618 or email to riskmanager@ewu.edu.
Medical/Health Insurance Coverage
Professional Liability insurance is not health insurance. A student’s personal medical insurance is their primary medical coverage. Students with paid internships are typically covered by the employer’s worker’s compensation insurance. Students on unpaid internships (i.e. volunteers) may also be covered by worker’s compensation if the host business/organization has opted to provide such coverage.
Placement Agreements (Affiliation Agreements)
Student internships often require an agreement with the host, which is referred to as an Affiliation Agreement. These agreements are initiated by the academic department and processed through the EWU purchasing office. For further information and assistance, please contact purchasing at purchasing@ewu.edu or (509) 359-2253.
