This tool is used to help a student calm down once their emotions become to much for them to handle. They will have different cool down methods and choose which methods will help them calm down.
When a student is upset, they will go to the designated spot for this activity and begin. They will take out a file folder filled with methods for cooling down, (I.e. “I can read,” or “I can take a deep breath.” They will choose which methods work best for them and once they have found their methods then they will actively do them in order to cool down. This activity gives the students many different methods so they can choose methods that work best for them. There can be an option for other emotions as well such what to do when you are sad or hyper.
I said that this tool belongs in the corrective phase because the students need to cool down after the behavior has already been performed. After the behavior they will pick out the methods that will help them cool down. This could also be the supportive phase, but I felt that it fit best under the corrective phase. I think that this is mostly student centered because the students are learning how to identify their own emotions. It is also student centered because they are figuring out how they want to cool themselves down. They are finding a method that works best for them and applying it to themselves. I said that this could also be collaborative because the teacher should come to the students after they have cooled down and discuss what worked and what didn’t.
