Science Education

SEEL Program

One of the major barriers elementary teachers face when attempting to engage their students in authentic scientific inquiry is the barrier of resources. Dr. Kathryn Baldwin and Dr. Gus Nollmeyer have teamed up in an effort to mediate this challenge. The Science Education Equipment Loan (SEEL) program is intended to connect local classroom teachers with the free use of borrowed materials and equipment. Through the SEEL program, all local teachers can enhance their science lessons with instruments and tools they may not have access to in their school. Gus would encourage all teachers to follow the link above and start taking advantage of this amazing FREE resource!

NGSS

ngss-854x481With the arrival of the Next Generation Science Standards, science education has undergone a major shift in intended direction. However, if elementary teachers do not feel prepared and empowered to provide authentic scientific inquiry in their classrooms the reality will fall far short of the lofty NextGen goals. A couple of resources that Gus would suggest as you pursue development as a science teacher include this great video series on the NGSS by Paul Andersen and the NSTA’s NGSS Hub. Also from the NSTA, the books you see listed in the column on the right are recent publications which you may find beneficial to your professional development.
