Our Mission

The Retention Work Group is dedicated to empowering student success by identifying challenges, implementing data-informed strategies, and fostering a campus environment that supports every student’s growth. Our primary goal is to enhance first-to-second-year retention rates and expand access to support for all students.

What We Are Doing

  • Data-Informed Retention Efforts: Tracking trends in student persistence, supporting high-risk courses, and strengthening early alert systems.
  • Faculty Engagement: Expanding faculty development, increasing participation in early alerts, and promoting mentorship opportunities.
  • Enhanced Student Support Services: Providing proactive advising, improving communication across departments, and expanding peer mentoring programs.
  • Pathways from K–12 & Community Colleges: Strengthening transfer partnerships, improving access, and increasing outreach to first-generation students.
  • Removing Institutional Barriers: Streamlining policies, simplifying financial aid processes, and ensuring a smoother student experience.
  • High-Impact Strategies: Scaling effective programs, reducing redundancies, and improving cross-department collaboration.
  • Continuous Improvement: Monitoring progress through a Retention Dashboard, gathering student feedback, and refining strategies to meet evolving needs.

Moving Forward

Through collaboration, innovation, and a shared commitment to student success, EWU continues to build a stronger learning community where every student has the tools and support needed to achieve their goals. Together, we are shaping the future of student success at Eastern Washington University.
