Volunteer

EWU Hackathon 2025 is looking for volunteers!

One of the key elements of Hackathon 2025 is having industry professionals who can help guide students when they are building their projects. Having access to professionals also allows students to ask about careers and what it’s like after graduating college.

For volunteers, there are two types: mentors and judges. For those who are looking to volunteer, you can apply to be both a mentor and a judge. However, you may not get both roles depending on availability and limited spots. This is due to budgetary reasoning. The main difference between the two can be found below.

Free Parking will be provided and complimentary meals will be provided. A mentor and judges room will be available for volunteers to relax and converse.

Volunteer Roles

Judges will help judge student projects. As the event ends, the judges are tasked with evaluating student projects. Criteria for judging involve multiple factors.

Mentors are volunteers whose goal is to help students succeed in developing their projects. As students often lack the technical expertise, mentors will help students with issues that they do not understand

Possible topics that could come up during the event for mentors:

  • Helping a team break their project down into smaller parts
  • Helping a team debug their code
  • Helping a team keep their project within the scope of the event
  • Helping a team setup their project structure in GitHub
  • Give feedback during team project development to improve the project quality

Timeframe

The main coding portion of the event runs from 9:00 am to 9:00 pm. Volunteers can stay at the event and help teams as long as they’d like. However, to ensure that we have enough food, we would like volunteers to specify a timeframe they will be there for. It also allows for student volunteers to prep name badges. This timeframe is just a rough estimate and doesn’t have to be exact.

Judges must be there long enough to assess how projects are going. Part of the criteria is seeing how development is going. This cannot be seen by just appearing at the end of the event for judging

The judging period will take place at 9pm

Here is the volunteer form. Please fill this out as soon as possible. We will email you two weeks before the event with more details.
