The Academic Affairs Excellence in Academic Advising Award

Exemplary academic advising and support plays an important role in the success of our undergraduate students. Therefore, the Office of the Associate Vice–President of Student Success, Policy, and Planning (Academic Affairs) is delighted to launch the Excellence in Academic Advising Award, which aims to recognize our Academic (CAAR) and Faculty Advisors who have demonstrated unwavering commitment to providing and/or improving the quality of academic advising, retention, and success of our students. 

Objective

The goal of this initiative is to facilitate student success by:

  • Recognizing and rewarding outstanding advisors who are cognizant of, and actively employs, best practices in academic advising services; 
  • Fostering greater awareness and support for effective academic advising; 
  • Enhancing the professional development of fellow advisors; 
  • Helping to retain valuable and essential contributors to our student success. 

Each year, two (2) advisorsone Academic (CAAR) and one Faculty – are expected to be selected and awarded USD 1,000 each, which MUST be used for professional development opportunities ONLY and MUST be utilized within TWO (2) years upon being awarded. 

The annual recognition event for both awards will occur in January at the Welcome Back to Campus celebration. 

Criteria  

CAAR Academic Advisors

  • Provides academic advising and support services (50 percent or more) to undergraduate students. 
  • Demonstrates commitment to academic advising and support throughout the academic year.
  • Exhibit leadership, professional growth, and mentorship within the advising community.
  • Nominations must be made by enrolled undergraduate students (each student may only lodge one nomination per candidate) OR peers.
  • CAAR Advisors cannot self-nominate. 

Faculty Advisors 

  • Provide academic advising and planning support to undergraduate students.   
  • Nominations must be made by enrolled undergraduate students (one nomination per student) OR peers. 
  • Faculty Advisors cannot self-nominate. 

Eligibility:

  • MUST BE a CAAR or Faculty Advisor at EWU campuses (including online) at the time of nomination. 
  • Nominees MUST provide academic advising and support services to undergraduate students.
  • Recipients may only be ELIGIBLE for nomination once every three academic years. 

Recognition:

  • Custom certificate of recognition to be displayed in the department.
  • Professional development funds for attending conferences, workshops, or seminars. 
  • A feature article published on Inside.EWU.edu and/or on CAAR’s website.
  • Awardees will be recognized during the annual return to campus party in January.

Nomination cycle: 

  • November 15th: Nomination closed and nominees notified.
  • December 7st: Nominees portfolios due.
  • December: Committee meets to review nominees (to be determined)
  • January: Nominees recognized
