Workshops

Maximize your time at Eastern Washington University with Academic Advising Workshops. The Academic Advising Workshops will teach you how to navigate degree paths efficiently, prepare you to enter enter a major, and ultimately graduating from EWU. During the workshops you will also meet your CAAR Academic Advisor, an expert in the EWU College you intend to enter. Explore the dropdowns below to learn more.

Starting in the Fall, 2025, ALL Freshmen and Transfer students with less than 40 credits will be required to attend an academic advising workshop prior to registering for classes. There will be two modalities to choose from – virtual (online students only via Zoom) and on campus in Monroe Hall, room 302.

Academic Advising Workshops will play an essential role in supporting student transition to campus by helping them to become informed on:

  • How to explore their academic interests and career goals;
  • How to plan their first year of courses and utilize academic tools (Navigate, DegreeWorks, EagleNet, etc).;
  • How to prepare for and use the EWU registration system;
  • Relevant policies and procedures;
  • How to connect with appropriate campus support services;
  • Key priority dates; and
  • Other pertinent information.

Together with the above stated, these workshops aim to help students to stay on track and make informed decisions when developing their academic plans and registering for classes.

These workshops are also designed to be interactive and therefore advisors will be available to help students explore their academic interests and goals; engage on ways to get involved on campus and be a part of the campus community; and support students in overcoming some of the more common challenges they may encounter during their transition to college life at Eastern Washington University.

These workshops will be held during each quarter and it is advised that students register prior to their assigned priority registration dates to ensure they are not held back from registering for classes.

Failure to attend your mandatory academic advising workshop

Students must attend their academic advising workshop to have their registration holds removed. Therefore, failure to attend may impact students in two important ways:

  • Inability to register for classes once their priority registration period begins; and
  • May limit course options if students prolong their registration.

Therefore, students are strongly encouraged to register for a workshop well in advance of their priority registration dates to ensure they are able to register for their classes.

Who should not be registering for Mandatory Academic Advising Workshops:

  • Incoming transfer students with 40 or more credits
  • Returning students
  • Freshmen and transfer (<40 credits) students that have already completed ONE Academic Advising Workshop

The above-mentioned students are advised to schedule a one-on-one advising session with their assigned academic advisor at the earliest time of convenience.

Students may register for an academic advising workshop three ways:

  • Walk-in (Center for Academic Advising and Retention, Monroe Hall, 305).
  • Call our front desk at 509-359-2345
  • Online

Students are encouraged to register for a workshop based on the college they are in. For instance, if a student is currently majoring in Chemistry, they must register for the College of Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (CSTEM) workshop. Similarly, if a student is enrolled in Criminology, they must register for the College of Arts, Humanities, and Social Sciences (CAHSS) workshop.

Exploratory students

Our advisors are uniquely qualified and skilled to help students navigate the various program requirements for the undergraduate majors offered at EWU. Therefore, students are strongly encouraged to actively explore the numerous majors we have to offer and make informed decisions within the first academic year, if possible.

Students who are declared but are planning to change their majors and those who are undecided/undeclared but may have a particular major in mind are advised to register for an academic advising workshop that aligns with the intended major.

For instance, if you are currently declared as a Sociology major but plan to switch to History, you must register for a CAHSS workshop since your intended major remains within the same college. However, if you are planning to change to Biology, then you are advised to register for a CSTEM workshop since your intended major is within that college.

Please be advised that by changing majors, you may be assigned new professional and faculty advisors based on your new majors.

Students will be able to register for academic advising workshops on select dates and times during each academic quarter. Online options will be made available for our online students via Zoom.

In preparation for your academic advising workshop, please complete the following steps:
