The School of Global Learning requires potential visiting scholars to have a plan for housing arrangements prior to acceptance to the program. We have three options for setting-up accommodations: SGL-provided housing, SGL-facilitated private housing, and non-supported housing (self-arranged.)
School of Global Learning Provided Housing
The School of Global Learning offers townhouses available for rent on the EWU Cheney campus. The townhouses are fully furnished with central heating and cooling, WiFi, and a Roku television streaming device all included in the rent. Each townhouse has a kitchen, bathroom, living space and two private bedrooms with closets. Within the complex, there are coin-operated laundry machines, a sports court, and US Mailboxes. Availability of SGL-provided housing is limited and may be shared with another scholar during your stay. For more information, contact Alex Cassano at acassano@ewu.edu.
Cost Estimates for Academic Year 2018-2019*
| 2 bedroom monthly rent | $750 |
| Monthly utilities | included |
| Cleaning deposit (non-refundable) | $200 |
*If the townhouse is shared with another scholar, the costs are split between each of them.
School of Global Learning Facilitated Housing
When SGL does not have available housing which is appropriate for a visiting scholar, we offer assistance in locating a rental from a private party. Such accommodations vary in requirements of the tenants (i.e. financial statements, identification, etc.,) amenities (i.e. internet, on-site laundry, etc.,) and billing structure (i.e. included utilities.) Additionally, most private rentals in Spokane and Cheney are not furnished, though rental furniture may be arranged through other private companies. If a scholar selects SGL-facilitated housing, we will work directly with you to find something that suits your needs, but we cannot guarantee services or pricing structure. It is important to note that in this arrangement, leases are signed directly between the scholar and the private individual or agency and the scholar is solely responsible for fulfilling all obligations of that contract.
Self-Arranged Housing
In some cases, potential scholars select to arrange their own housing through online resources, with the help of their faculty mentors, or by other means. When scholars choose this option, SGL does not provide support congruent with the SGL-provided or the SGL-facilitated options. The scholar is expected to outline a plan for housing prior to acceptance to the program and provide SGL with regular updates on the progress of their arrangements prior to arrival in the US. As with SGL-facilitated housing, leases are signed directly between the scholar and the private individual or agency and the scholar is solely responsible for fulfilling all obligations of that contract.
Spokane-Cheney Private Housing Market
The cities of Spokane and Cheney reside in Spokane County. The rental vacancy (the percentage of rentals available) was 2.4% in 2017. This is compared to the 6.2% U.S. national average and 3.7% Washington State average. What this means is that choices on size, type, and location of rentals are limited and prices are high. The average rental price for a two-bedroom apartment in Spokane County in 2018 was $1150 per month.
