EWU Policy 401-03: Background Checks – First Read

- Clarifies that EWU only requests credit background checks for positions when legally required or for those positions that involve major financial fiduciary responsibilities.

In Section 1.2 – Credit Background Checks, the phrase “the university may conduct a credit background check when legally required or for employees whose jobs involve major financial fiduciary responsibilities” is used. “Major financial fiduciary responsibilities” can be viewed as a subjective mark. I would encourage a more definitive definition of when credit checks will be performed. For some employees/perspective employees’ beliefs, “major financial fiduciary responsibility” could mean responsibility of over $1,000, while for others that threshold could be substantially higher. A defined mark would provide clarity while also holding the University consistent in application of this policy.
