Start A Project

To initiate a new project, students first meet with an Ideation Lab employee. During this meeting, students describe their project goals, and the Ideation Lab staff match these goals with the available equipment and materials. Given their expertise in various forms of fabrication, the staff can provide detailed explanations of the process and requirements needed to complete the project. We welcome students of all experience levels—whether you are new to sewing or 3D printing, or have years of experience, the Ideation Lab is committed to meeting students where they are and facilitating a smooth process to achieve an efficient and accurate project outcome.

Once we identify the necessary hardware, software, and materials, Lab employees will begin the quoting process. If a project exceeds the scope of an employee’s expertise, they will consult with our Director, Dr. Philip Appel, or one of our faculty mentors. After refining the project and documenting the process, the Lab will discuss material and time considerations with the student. The Lab covers the first $100 of materials for any project and does not charge for staff labor. If the required materials exceed $100, students may need to provide additional funding. Considerations may also be made regarding students supplying their own materials or purchasing them externally.

Once the reference materials are provided and any potential charges or payments are addressed, Ideation Lab staff will begin the project. Project completion time may vary based on the project’s size, scale, and the availability of Lab equipment. Staff will discuss the estimated time required for each stage of the project, from reference material creation to prototyping and final production. Upon completion, students will be notified that their project is ready for pickup at the Ideation Lab, CEB 125.
