Campus Master Plan

The Campus Master Plan will serve as a visionary framework for the University, informed by the pillars established through prior strategic planning efforts. Its purpose is to guide the future development of the campus in a thoughtful and intentional way.

Campus Master Plan Overview

The Campus Master Plan (CMP) aims to preserve the unique character of the campus and promote the EWU brand, while also reflecting and embracing the broader community. Building on recent efforts like the EWU Landscape Master Plan and the EWU Climate Action Plan, the Campus Master Plan will explore opportunities to strengthen existing systems, bolster climate resiliency, promote the polytechnic brand, and encourage innovation throughout academic and operational areas.

Eastern Washington University’s CMP Process

Preparation for the Master Plan began in summer 2025 with the Facility Condition Assessment, followed by the Campus Suitability Assessment in fall 2025. The formal Master Plan process kicked off in December, starting with visioning meetings with the ELT and CMP Steering Committee. These meetings resulted in the following Guiding Principles for the Master Plan:

  • Clear Communication and Collaborative Participation
    • Ensure clear, accessible, and consistent communication through multiple avenues to foster a shared understanding of the Master Plan and ensure broad engagement.
  • Campus Image and Pride
    • Celebrate the EWU experience through modern facilities that enhance identity. Strengthen gateways, entrances, and campus edges to establish a clear sense of arrival and identity.
  • Activation and Engagement + Cohesive Campus Form and Identity
    • Foster campus environments that inspire daily interaction, collaboration, and campus energy. Promote campus vibrancy with visible, accessible programs aligned with key circulation zones.
  • Highest and Best Use
    • Guide decisions informed by data, enrollment trends, budget realities, and long-term stewardship. Address deferred maintenance and ensure facilities deliver a consistent, high-quality experience, even within an environment of fiscal austerity.
  • Adoption and Application of the Campus Master Plan
    • Identify key champions to lead accountability and advocacy, ensuring successful implementation of the campus vision.
  • Facilitate an Applied Experiential Learning Environment
    • Foster a hands-on, active learning environment across all disciplines, making learning visible and reinforcing EWU’s polytechnic brand

From early January to late March, the consultant will engage the EWU community in a variety of ways to gather input, assess the information, and ultimately provide recommendations. A draft of the report will be available for review and input in late March. The final recommendations, including an implementation plan, will be presented to the Board of Trustees in May 2026. Any comments will be incorporated and the final report published in June 2026. See timeline here.
