Four Poems by Nance Van Winckel<\/h1>\n\n\n\n

“Outlaw Mentality”<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

\n-that’s what the coroner says caught you up,
\nbrought you down. A life of that fuck-that
\nstalled on the track. Hat on one side,
\nbroken noggin with its go-
\nyour-own-way dream
\nbled out on the other.\nI catch your drift. To wake and stuff it
\ndown. To sleep as it opens out. Me
\nand my wire cutters; widening
\nthe fence hole. I know exactly
\nhow few snips will
\nget me through.\n<\/p>\n\n\n\n

*\nWhite-hot, black-hard, the rails return
\nfor mister you and mister not-you-there
\non the path that leads to the path. Once
\nit fit your shoe. Blood-crust and blue-fly hum,
\nthe one who’s caught your whiff
\nslinks through the hole, stands
\nin the meadow. So like a wave,
\nthe track goes out and comes back. REAL
\n<\/em>ON STEEL<\/em> claims the freight car
\nclanging into the by and bye.\n<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Alive at the End of the World<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

(Gnome with Ax)\nSand and the glue from dead horses
\nmade me. . .so you’d know me. Thirteen
\nseconds in a store window-you see
\nI’m you rowing away in a rogue dream.\nGive me the full brunt of sun
\non your door stoop. Make me
\n|the stopper atop the lower city
\nwith its brute animal wails
\nI’ll hear for you, loudly so.\nOne day you won’t have a mind
\nto change anymore
\nabout where I’ll live on, or how,
\nwithout you.\n<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Because B<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

\nYour arrival, admit it, was up
\nand out of the mud. So what,
\nhere you are. One four o’clock
\nyou walk across the lake.
\nIts ice creaks: gut syllables,
\nlingo between fish and fowl.\nYou’d refused the skates because
\nA) surely then you’d have to
\nperform a spin, and B) they could
hurt<\/em> the ice. You its executioner,
\nyou the handle turning the blade.\n<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Last Address<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

\nWhat gold flitter has made of your ear
\na hive? Clouds tug loose a last dream\nand now the rainfall bears down
\nyour secrets. The question’s not\nif the river had its way with you,
\nspit you out as a small inquiry\nunfit for the big answer. No,
\nthe question won’t pertain to tattoos\nor unmatchable DNA, but to what
\nworld, under what sun, in what situ\nwe go on finding each you, each you,
\nthe not-missed, the never missing.\n<\/p>\n\n\n\n

* We stand at the foot of you.
Bees and swallows rustle the grass around half flesh, half bone, half
here, half gone. Dot of earth: nothing owed or owned. Once you were a bud
in someone’s belly. A swim, a sleep, then to crown your way out. Keep
mum. Keep it to yourself, Little Prince of the Reigning Question,
the would-you-do-it-all-again

with the size listed as
