Two Poems by Toma\u017e \u0160alamun<\/h1>\n\n\n\n

The Cross<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

I’ll draw a cross<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Serpentines on my rocking chair<\/p>\n\n\n\n

How pathetically the shirt hangs<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Once the body has left it<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Yet it’s still a shirt<\/p>\n\n\n\n

And here’s what clinches our defeat for us<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Both a suitcase and a T-bar<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Have you ever seen a chair<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Running from the bathroom towards the kitchen<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Or vice-versa for it doesn’t matter<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Hysterically asking<\/p>\n\n\n\n

What about my eternal life<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Have you ever seen a balcony railing<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Saying I’ve had enough<\/p>\n\n\n\n

I’ve had enough<\/p>\n\n\n\n

I’ve had enough<\/p>\n\n\n\n

I too am fond of my modest life<\/p>\n\n\n\n

I too must have my share<\/p>\n\n\n\n

And if you’ve walked down Glagoljaska street<\/p>\n\n\n\n

And seen an old boot lying<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Between house number four and the well<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Left there from that year when<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The last nighttime regattas took place and Mario won<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Did the boot ask you<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Hello excuse me<\/p>\n\n\n\n

For bothering you here on the street but<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Doesn’t it seem to you<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Doesn’t it seem to you<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Doesn’t it seem to you<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Things are inscrutable in their craftiness<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Unattainable to the rage of the living<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Invulnerable in their endless flight<\/p>\n\n\n\n

You can’t catch up with them<\/p>\n\n\n\n

You can’t seize them<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Motionless in their staring<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Boat<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Its geneses are tiny silken<\/p>\n\n\n\n

shifts, thinner than<\/p>\n\n\n\n

the nail of one’s littler finger. Are earthquakes and wars<\/p>\n\n\n\n

the collapse of galaxies? A couple of swipes<\/p>\n\n\n\n

with a brush at the earth’s skin,<\/p>\n\n\n\n

a diary?<\/p>\n\n\n\n

What is minimal?<\/p>\n\n\n\n

What proves<\/p>\n\n\n\n

the madness of a bud opening,<\/p>\n\n\n\n

of a deer grazing? The poet bestows<\/p>\n\n\n\n

wreathes, lays on hands. Yet only he who<\/p>\n\n\n\n

veils his vision survives.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

He who has seen too much has his eyes<\/p>\n\n\n\n

pecked out by crows, and<\/p>\n\n\n\n

rightfully so. <\/em>The poet<\/p>\n\n\n\n

kills the deer.<\/p>\n\n<\/div><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n\n
