Two Poems by Charlie Clark<\/h1>\n\n\n\n

Devil Collecting Roadkill<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

 <\/p>\n\n\n\n

So often little pieces of the bodies stay.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Not just insects or the bleaching<\/p>\n\n\n\n

the roadside grasses take,<\/p>\n\n\n\n

but actual fur and bone.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

That’s just shoddy work to him,<\/p>\n\n\n\n

and puzzling, given<\/p>\n\n\n\n

the county’s distaste for decay.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

He goes out sometimes to scrape the leavings.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Not that it’s much fun for him.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

It’s not like he’s saving them for jewelry.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

He prefers that drivers see<\/p>\n\n\n\n

the clean white lines hashing over black,<\/p>\n\n\n\n

the sun and its dead beaming.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

That’s what he wants them rushing toward.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Devil’s Materials (Partial List)<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

 <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Sand he spits his blood into.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Buffed glass. All reflective surfaces.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Light, however weakly he corrals it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Young men and their enthusiasms.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The way a wooden window slides.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Air, still or moving. Apples, obviously.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

But also mango and wild flowers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Commuter traffic ambulance sirens holler at.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The collected works of Jack London.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Wax museums. The writing on park<\/p>\n\n\n\n

benches out in front of them.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Rawhide or any other skin.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The difference between them.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The sight of that gap closing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
