Winner of the 2021 Spokane Prize, Elsa Nekola\u2019s debut collection of short stories, Sustainable Living, shines a light on the lives of women in the backwoods and small towns of the upper Midwest. Forced to contend with harsh climates and even harsher realities of poverty and fraught family relations, these characters are united in their shared desire for connection. Nekola\u2019s masterful storytelling invites the reader into what feels like a hidden world of struggle and serendipity.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Elsa Nekola is a writer based in Madison, Wisconsin. Her short fiction has appeared in Ploughshares, Nimrod International Journal, Witness, The Cincinnati Review\u2019s miCRo series, Passages North, and other journals. She received her MFA from the University of Mississippi in 2018. Sustainable Living is her first book.
