Custodial Services involves sustainable practices in day-to-day activities. By using products that are as eco-friendly and reusable as possible, Custodial Services plays a crucial part in creating an eco-friendly and healthy campus here at EWU.
Custodial Services has a big impact on EWU; they are responsible for keeping all of the buildings on campus clean, and the efforts they go to in order to reduce EWU’s footprint makes a big difference. Some of the ways they do this is by using less packaging, using mop heads and towels that are designed for 500+ uses, avoiding toxic cleaning products, and using Ozone cleaner.
One of the ways Custodial Services reduces toxic cleaning products and waste is by using Aqueous Ozone cleaner. Ozone cleaner is “activated oxygen”, or O3, with 3 atoms of oxygen instead of O2, the oxygen we breathe. Tap water is infused with the ozone, and it is one of the best cleaners in the world. It is able to sterilize bacteria, viruses, odors, dirt, grease, and other contaminants. Not only is Ozone cleaner natural, non-toxic, reduces packaging waste, and uses tap water which returns to regular tap water after 24 hours, it keeps custodial services workers, students, and faculty safe from toxic chemicals while being eco-friendly.
Custodial Services strives to use the greenest products, and uses reusable and recyclable products whenever possible. All of the paper towels on campus are recyclable, and they offer hand dryers as paper towel alternatives, reducing the use of hand towels and EWU’s carbon footprint. Many restrooms at EWU now offer center pull toilet paper, which is more sanitary and cuts down on toilet paper waste.
Custodial Services keeps our entire campus clean. From the dorms, to the URC Building, to the PUB, Custodial Services plays a big part in making sure that we have a clean, safe campus to enjoy. Their efforts to be as green as possible are for the safety of students, faculty, and Custodial Services’ staff, and to help protect the environment.
