\nIn Print and Video, spread the news! How would you like to be involved in one of Satori’s most important lifelines? The eyes and ears of camp, otherwise known as this class, will be responsible for documenting events, highlights and thoughts throughout the week both on paper and on film! Be a part of creating the stories and producing web content that will ultimately capture how Satori 2014 will be remembered.

ZSAT 11 – 58: Bring in Da Noise, Bring in Satori! (CRN\u00a022417)\u00a0(Capacity: 20)<\/strong>
\nExperience the extraordinary world of African and Latin hand percussion. You will learn techniques for playing several different instruments in the four major families of African\/Latin percussion:\u00a0bells, shakers, mallets, and drums. We will take these techniques and learn to layer together drum grooves based on Duple and Triple time signatures, explore techniques for developing solos, and perform for other campers. We will also experiment with Organic (found)\u00a0percussion by scrounging, salvaging, and building our own percussion instruments from the world around us. Remembers, as a percussionist, the world is your instrument and the grooves are endless!<\/p>\n

ZSAT 11 – 14: The World’s Best Strategy Game (CRN 22393)\u00a0(Capacity: 20)<\/strong>
\nGo is a board game of territorial conquest and originated in China 2,700 years ago. The game is rich in strategy despite its few, relatively simple rules. In this class, we’ll learn the rules, rudimentary tactics, and start on concepts of strategy. Stunningly beautiful as a game, Go is a perfect introduction to Asian conflict-theory, history, all while offering a ferocious intellectual challenge. We’ll play games, get stronger, and learn about Go’s past and future. *There is a $6 supply fee associated with this class, which must be paid at the time of online registration.<\/em><\/p>\n

ZSAT 11: Alternative Energy as a Pathway to a Sustainable Future (CRN 22390)\u00a0(Capacity: 20)
\n<\/strong>The availability of energy is a key issue in the world and current energy options are unable to meet the demands of the future. \u00a0This class will be a discussion of alternative energy for a sustainable future. \u00a0We will look at and evaluate a number of different alternative energy solutions and the benefits and drawback of each. \u00a0While many different alternative energy solutions will be discussed, this class will have an emphasis on current trends in fuel cell technologies. \u00a0At the end of the week you will have a strong foundation for continued exploration of alternative energy solutions.<\/p>\n

ZSAT 11 – 15: What Happened the Day the Newspaper got a Facebook Account\u00a0(CRN\u00a022394)\u00a0\u00a0(Capacity: 20)<\/strong>
\nThe media world has changed more than anyone could possibly imagine in the last 10 years. Gone are the days of ticking wire transmissions and typewriters. Facebook starts revolutions. Reporters are on Twitter. Videos go viral on YouTube. We will take a look at how news is generated and why you should care how you get it. In this class, we will also visit with some of the exciting careers a changing media world is offering.\u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n

ZSAT 11:\u00a0 Gender and the Media (CRN 22391)\u00a0(Capacity: 20)
\n<\/strong>The last few years have been remarkable in terms of steps taken toward gender equality. In 2012 a record number of women were elected to the United States Senate. A completely gender-neutral toy store opened in the UK, and major toy companies have participated in discussions with their customers to offer more toys that appeal to both boys and girls.\u00a0For the first time Saudi Arabia allowed women to\u00a0participate in the Olympic Games. And yet despite these strides there are still only 20 female Senators (out of 100), girls in Saudi Arabia are prohibited from participating in organized sports, and boys and
\ngirls are exposed constantly to unrealistic portrayals of the genders in TV, print, and other mediums. In this class we will explore the current and historical representation of the genders in the media and in society, examine the effects of media on society, and learn to look at the world through a gender-conscious lens.<\/p>\n

ZSAT 11 – 16: Catch a Brain Wave (CRN 22395)\u00a0(Capacity: 20)<\/strong>
\nThis class will be held in a psychophysiology laboratory that can be used to measure GSR (sweat gland activity in the palms), heart rate, vasodilatation and constriction of peripheral blood vessels (using a photo electric cell placed on a finger), brain waves, eye movements, and facial muscle activity during emotional responses. Students will be “hooked up” to the equipment and we will look at your own physiological activity.\u00a0 We will also study lie detection (GSR), attraction (pupilar response), dreaming (rapid eye movement), stress (heart rate and vasomotor activity), and hypnosis (brain waves). This class will emphasize personality differences with biological origins.<\/p>\n

ZSAT 11:\u00a0 How\u00a0to Make a Cheeseburger from Scratch (CRN 22392)<\/strong>(Capacity: 20)<\/strong>
\nWhat would it take to pull together all the individual ingredients and make America’s most-loved food item? More than you’d expect… in fact, it would’ve been almost impossible to make a cheeseburger more than 100 years ago. In this class, you’ll learn how to be a farmer, a microbiologist, a butcher, a flour miller, a baker, a cheese maker, a cook and food scientist. Together we’ll explore how food gets to your table.<\/p>\n

ZSAT 11:\u00a0 A Stitch in Time: Crocheting for the 21st century (CRN 22400)(Capacity: 20)<\/strong>
\nCrocheting isn’t just for cold weather or grandmas anymore! In this class we’ll learn the basic crochet stitches, and make some fun summer projects. Once you learn the basics the possibilities are endless. Impress your friends and family with your ability to make cute, unique accessories of your own design. We’ll talk about crochet terminology, counting stitches, and reading patterns, as well as the different types of yarn and hooks and how to choose them. Resources for further learning after camp will be provided, so you can build on your knowledge and make projects throughout the year. Even if you think you don’t have a crafty bone in your body, give it a try-anyone can crochet.<\/p>\n

\n10:30 a.m. – 12:20 p.m.<\/strong> ZSAT 11 – 10:\u00a0The Ideals of the Samurai (CRN 22387)\u00a0(Capacity: 20)<\/strong>
\nFor nearly a thousand years, the warrior class in Japan ruled all levels of society. Appropriating the name “Samurai,” these warriors dedicated their lives to the pursuit of perfection in all of their daily activities. Meaning “to serve,” the samurai believed in their cause as a just one. In this class, we will examine the daily lives of the samurai and the culture that surrounded them. Bring your interest in mysticism as we study the banner system and philosophy the samurai lived under. From the moment they woke in the morning until they laid their heads down at night, and idea of bringing harmony to the world was their primary aim. As we dive into the codes and ideals of the samurai and how that impacted their lives, as a class we will find ways to incorporate how they lived into our own lives. A true lesson in satori (or sudden enlightenment) will be had by all!<\/p>\n

ZSAT 11: “Swords, Skulls, and Sonnets: a modern look at William Shakespeare” (CRN 22396)(Capacity: 20)<\/strong>
\nYou have probably talked about him in school. You have probably read or seen Shakespeare performed, probably in movie form. So why are we still doing these dusty 400 year old plays? Let’s really dig into the canon, and see what makes these timeless stories tick. Let’s learn the smart, funny, and often bawdy Bard.<\/p>\n

ZSAT 11 – : Judo and Self-Defense (CRN\u00a022403)<\/strong>(Capacity: 20)<\/strong>
\nIchi! Ni! San! Shi! Students will learn basic karate, judo and self-defense techniques taught in the authentic martial arts atmosphere. The course will include moving basics, kata, basic throwing and falling techniques and knowledge of Eastern culture. The concepts of dignity and respect will be emphasized along with a strengthening of the spirit, which allows the student to push back the limits of their physical prowess.<\/p>\n

ZSAT 11 – 21: The Satori Film Challenge (CRN\u00a0<\/strong>22397)\u00a0(Capacity: 16)<\/strong>
\nIn this class, campers will learn to\u00a0express their ideas through film\u00a0by tackling unique challenges daily. They will be divided into teams and work to push their\u00a0creativity to new levels through writing, cinematography, and special\u00a0effects. The campers will\u00a0also have to complete their work under a deadline, as every day’s videos\u00a0get\u00a0uploaded onto the camp’s website, making this truly\u00a0the\u00a0greatest Satori challenge ever!<\/p>\n

ZSAT 11: Putin: The Soviet Reunion and the Second World War? (CRN 22405 )(Capacity: 20)<\/strong>
\nThe Russian writer Masha Gessen ominously\u00a0subtitled her biography of Vladimir Putin\u00a0The Man Without A Face.\u00a0\u00a0Putin, a\u00a0former KGB apparatchik ,<\/em>\u00a0has eviscerated the Russian constitution and manufactured a new personality cult.\u00a0 Dissent from\u00a0Pussy Riot<\/em>\u00a0and journalists\u00a0is met with sentences to the gulag or assassination.\u00a0His intervention in the Ukraine is predicated\u00a0by the\u00a0delusional\u00a0pretense that the coup was orchestrated Nazis. Learn how Putin’s autocracy is in line with Russian history- Ivan IV (the Terrible) to Stalin- from a scholar who has\u00a0studied in the Soviet Union and published several works on the\u00a0de-Stalinization<\/em>\u00a0policies of Gorbachev.\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n

ZSAT 11: Inspired Doodling (CRN 22406)(Capacity: 20)<\/strong>
\nWhen you are bored, do you have a habit of drawing all over every post-it or piece of paper you can find? If so, this is the class for you! In this class, we will create intricate designs and patterns by doodling!\u00a0We’ll use graphite, colored inks, pens and watercolors to make fabulous artistic creations.\u00a0 No prior art experience necessary, just a wild imagination.
\nThere is a $6 lab fee associated with this course which must be paid at the time tuition is due.<\/em><\/p>\n

ZSAT 11: Pots and Pans and Cowbells: Science as Sound (CRN\u00a022407)(Capacity: 20)<\/strong>
\nHave you ever stopped and listened to the world around you? The printer, or a car passing by — all of these things make sound, but at what point can we consider sound “music”? This class will look at the physics behind sound waves and the approaches different cultures have had toward music as a science, delving into looking at music in a format entirely made of numbers. Homemade pickups, loop pedals, and mixing boards will be included this year, along with plenty of cowbell.
\nThere is a $15 lab fee associated with this course which must be paid at the time tuition is due.<\/em><\/p>\n

ZSAT\u00a011: Sashiko and the Art of Repair (CRN 22408)<\/strong>(Capacity: 20)<\/strong>
\nStudy Sashiko, a traditional Japanese stitching technique used to repair and reinforce garments.\u00a0 We will create our own Sashiko works, and\u00a0simultaneously learn to question American habits of consumption.\u00a0 What is the real value of the products we own?\u00a0 How should things be made?\u00a0 How long should objects last?\u00a0 We make decisions everyday about the products we choose to buy, and the ways of life we support with our purchases.\u00a0 Come prepared to question the ethics of everyday objects, and to participate in an art of making.<\/p>\n

ZSAT 11: Not All Engineers Drive Trains (CRN 22416)(Capacity: 20)<\/strong>
\nWhat comes to mind when you hear the term “engineering”? Today, it encompasses a wide range of fields that\u00a0integrate\u00a0analytical skills and\u00a0creativity. It requires attention to fine detail and an enormous imagination to solve problems of an ever-growing and complex society.\u00a0This class will focus primarily on Civil Engineering that integrate aspects of transportation, structures, architecture, and hydraulics into one week long project. Come prepared to work in teams and get your competitive edge on!<\/p>\n

Afternoon Session
\n1:10 – 3 p.m.<\/strong> ZSAT 11 – 50: The Philosophy and Culture of Satori (CRN\u00a022398)\u00a0(Capacity: 25)<\/strong>
\nSatori, by the Zen Buddhist definition, is a state of sudden spiritual enlightenment. In this class we will explore not only the meaning of Satori, but the culture that surrounds it. We will study both the Japanese language and the writings of the Japanese. Students in this class will even get to use Japanese calligraphy and make their own Kanji. Prepare to be enlightened!<\/p>\n

ZSAT 11 – 27: The Secret Society of Linguists (CRN\u00a022414)\u00a0(Capacity: 20)<\/strong>
\nOlder than science, books and even math; language has been the hallmark of humanity. It binds us together and makes us a community. Campers will look at examples of a variety of languages, from Latin to Klingon and German to Elven, to learn the basic fundamentals of Linguistic Theory and to construct their own secret language.<\/p>\n

ZSAT <\/strong>11 – 52: It’s All in Your Head: Mental Health from Molecules to Mood (CRN 22409)<\/strong>(Capacity: 20)<\/strong>
\nProblems such as depression, anxiety, and psychotic disorders often lack outwardly obvious physical symptoms, and so are often unnoticed by people who aren’t directly affected by them. But mental illness is much more common than you might guess. Approximately one quarter of adults and ten percent of children in the U.S. suffer from some mental disorder at any time. In this class we will explore the meaning and treatment of mental illness: where is the line between “normal” and “abnormal” thinking? Where is the line between the “physical” and the “mental” brain? And if physical changes in the brain are the cause, does that necessarily make medication the best therapy? Join a licensed therapist and a biophysicist in surveying what is known–and what isn’t–about the causes, prevention, clinical symptoms, and treatment of mental illness.<\/p>\n

ZSAT 11 – 54 & 55: Ummm….Wanna Dance?! (CRN\u00a022411 if you’re a boy) (CRN\u00a022412 if you’re a girl)(Capacity: 10 male\/10 female)<\/strong>
\nDancing with a partner is fun. There is no experience necessary to learn these dances: East Coast Swing, West Coast Swing, Salsa, Rhumba, Cha-cha, Waltz, Fox Trot, and Tango. Warning: Boys and girls will dance together. P.S. If you have taken this class before, you had better be practicing – whether you are taking this class or not.
\n* All participants MUST bring non-marking, close-toed SHOES (no sandals) or they will not be allowed to participate.<\/em><\/p>\n

ZSAT 11 – 53: Stick it to Me (CRN 22410)\u00a0(Capacity: 14)<\/strong> Fencing at Satori is formal instruction in movement and blade position. We will work from the perspective of balance and target to master the ebb and flow of combat. Similarly we will touch on the historical foundations of fencing and how it has changed through time. But, ultimately, it is the opportunity to play with swords… and so we take the time to learn the fundamentals in order to share the “joy” of edge and point with\u00a0others.<\/p>\n

ZSAT 11: Satori Chamber Singers (CRN\u00a022399)\u00a0(Capacity: 30)<\/strong>
\nSing, sing a song. Sing out loud. Sing out strong! In this class which is being brought back due to high demand after a decade-long hiatus, is for all levels of singers. Boys and girls are welcome. If you love to sing, this is the class for you. The Satori Chamber Singers will learn several different types of songs to sing and there may even be opportunity to solo. The Satori Chamber Singers will have several chances throughout the week to perform for the camp. Whether you have experience or not, come sing your heart out!<\/p>\n

ZSAT 11: Color Me Bad (CRN 22413)\u00a0(Capacity: 20)<\/strong>
\nDesign and product development are complex processes involving many disciplines. Business, writing, engineering, illustration, manufacturing, leadership, marketing, and of course, design are just a few of the specialties needed to turn an idea into a product. You will be a part of a small design consultancy working for a client to deliver a well thought out product solution. Learn how to think creatively, communicate complex ideas, work collaboratively, and to give and take constructive criticism. Let’s design something.<\/p>\n

ZSAT 11 – 57: Get this Party\u00a0Started! \u00a0 (CRN 22415)\u00a0(Capacity: 20)<\/strong>
\nHave you ever wondered what it takes to DJ the Satori dance? The class will cover DJ theory. We will be focusing on audio equipment, digital technology, music types and styles, building set, playlists and learning how to lead interactive games. Learn how to jump from Lil Wayne to Frank Sinatra and from dubstep to hip-hop and back. If you’re lucky, you may even get to help DJ Satori’s dance!<\/p>\n

ZSAT 11: Life of Games (CRN 22418)(Capacity: 20)<\/strong>
\nIn The Life of Games, students will explore the rich history and culture surrounding games. From ancient games of chance to misappropriating semi-sacred artifacts to pass the time, humans have a great tradition of applying rules to play.
