Throwback Thursday: Cadet Debra Dutton at 1977 ROTC Advanced Camp

Considering it is now the heart of Advanced Camp season for ROTC battalions across the country, I decided this week to share a picture of an Eastern Washington University (EWU) Reserve Officer Training Corps (ROTC) Cadet attending Advanced Camp back in 1977.  Back then EWU was called Eastern Washington State College (EWSC).  Here is what is written on the back of the picture:

By: Sp4 Michael Gough

Debra Dutton composes a warning order while participating in a squad mini-ex.  Cadet Dutton is attending the 1977 (through Eastern Washington State College) Army ROTC Advanced Camp at Ft. Lewis, WA.

If anyone remembers Cadet Dutton please leave a comment and let us know about what you remember about one of our Fighting Eagles alumni.

Go ROTC!  Go Fighting Eags!

  1. Hi,

Regarding throwback Thursday, I did not know Debra Dutton but it would be fun to know what happened to her. I put her name into the internet search engine and found a person by that name who once lived in Battle Ground, WA and is 64 years old which is about the right age for someone who graduated in 77 or 78.:

One source says she lives in Lockhart, TX (not far from Austin and Fort Hood) and the other says she lives in Odessa, TX. In neither listing is there a phone number..

White Pages.com says she lives in Odessa, Texas but lists Battle Ground, WA as a former address.

  2. Deb was a solid, hard working cadet who was very ready for her gold bars in ’78. I do not remember what she was branched (t’was 40 years ago!!), but she ultimately retired in Texas as a colonel after marrying an AF officer. She was my partner in the annual run to the lake (Fish)….fun !! Her class of 23 in ’78 was very, professionally successful. And I, as an Inf Maj was their MS3 instructor who’s stayed in touch with many of them, still. They’re now good friends….who will forever be Savage Eagles….HOO AH !!

  3. Mick, thanks for sharing your memories about Debra. That is awesome that she went from writing that warning order at Advanced Camp to becoming a Colonel many years later!

By the way there is no longer a Fish Lake run. What route did you run back then to get there?

    • We ran from Cadet Hall to the lake on the paved road all the way. Each cadet ran with a buddy, and all completed the run. We had a nice picnic at the lakeI and returned in a bus to Cadet Hall at dusk. Great adventure, great memories. Now they are a class of aging retired Army Officers..chuckle. I’m so pleased that several still maintain an active relationship with their old class Poobah, Major Mick.
