All my research and writing pivots on the environmental humanities<\/strong>, that place where culture and ecology meet. See the covers of my ten books below. I dedicate my royalties to nonprofit causes. One cause is the Seattle-based\u00a0HistoryLink<\/a>, the encyclopedia of Washington state history. Other recipients of royalties have included student scholarships, the\u00a0Spokane Riverkeeper<\/a>, the\u00a0Lands Council<\/a>, and\u00a0Friends of the Clearwater<\/a>.
My first book<\/strong>,\u00a0John Jossely<\/em>n, Colonial Traveler<\/a>, concerns an early natural historian in New England. My ecological memoir\u00a0In\u00a0Earshot of Water<\/em><\/a> (find review\u00a0here<\/a>)\u00a0won a Washington State Book Award, adding to recognition from the Academy of American Poets and the Society of Professional Journalists. My foremost scholarly book is\u00a0Explorations in Ecocriticism: Advocacy, Bioregionalism, and Visual Design<\/em><\/a>\u00a0(2015). Here is\u00a0a review<\/a>\u00a0of my Explorations<\/em>\u00a0by a Frenchwoman writing for a scholarly journal in Spain.
Much of my work<\/strong> is theoretical<\/strong>, including\u00a0this<\/a>\u00a0article on rivers in\u00a0Green Theory and Praxis<\/em>, and\u00a0this<\/a>\u00a0one on archival research I undertook at the Smithsonian’s Archives of American Art.\u00a0Louisiana State University Press, founded in 1935, issued my In<\/em><\/a>terrogating<\/em>\u00a0Travel: Guidance from a Reluctant Tourist<\/em><\/a> in 2023.\u00a0Here<\/a>\u00a0is a link to a review of that book in\u00a0Publishers Weekly<\/em>,\u00a0here<\/a>\u00a0a link to reviews on Amazon.<\/p>\n\n\n
