Claudio has been accepted to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.purdue.edu\">Purdue University<\/a>&#8216;s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.purdue.edu\/gradschool\/diversity\/programs\/summer-research-opportunities-program\/\">Summer Research Opportunities Program<\/a> (SROP) to work with\u00a0faculty mentor Professor <a href=\"https:\/\/engineering.purdue.edu\/ursemlab\/Home.html\">Tamara Kinzer-Ursem<\/a>, with the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/engineering.purdue.edu\/Engr\">College of Engineering<\/a> in the <a href=\"https:\/\/engineering.purdue.edu\/BME\">School of Biomedical Engineering<\/a>. This exceptional opportunity includes a stipend of $4000, r<span style=\"font-size: inherit;\">esearch experience, r<\/span>oundtrip transportation, university housing for eight weeks, <span style=\"font-size: inherit;\">p<\/span>rofessional development workshops, access to Purdue\u2019s facilities, Poster Research presentations,\u00a0community building social activities, and a\u00a0Closing Awards Ceremony.<\/p>\n<p>Claudio is majoring in Biology and minoring in Engineering at EWU. With mentor <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ewu.edu\/cstem\/biology\/faculty-staff\/\">Dr. David Daberkow<\/a>, in the summer of 2022, Claudio developed <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">his own experiment to determine the best place for <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">dopamine microelectrode placement in the rat brain. He built on Dr. Daberkow\u2019s previous experiment and searched for a lesion created\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">in the rat dorsal striatum, using a cryostat machine to slice the brain and find the exact area in the striatum where they caused the lesion.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>The McNair staff are gratified to see Claudio&#8217;s hard work recognized by his acceptance into Purdue&#8217;s SROP, where he will gain experience doing research at the intersection of Biology and Engineering.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Congratulations to EWU McNair Scholar Claudio Escalante!
