Monica was selected by the McNair Scholars&#8217; selection committee on the basis of her passion for research, commitment to attaining a PhD, and overall potential for success in graduate school.<\/p>\n<p>The federally-funded TRIO Ronald E. McNair Post-baccalaureate Achievement Program at EWU selects motivated and talented juniors and seniors who are first-generation and low-income college students, and\/or from groups underrepresented at the doctoral level to introduce them to academic research and provide them with effective strategies for getting into and graduating from PhD programs.<\/p>\n<p>Monica Miranda\u00a0is an undergraduate at Eastern Washington University pursuing a major in Applied Developmental Psychology and minoring in Spanish, with a certificate in Child and Family Support. She wants to research the psychology of Latinx and Hispanic communities. This summer, under the guidance of\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ewu.edu\/cpp\/psychology\/contact-us\/\">Dr. Shanna Davis<\/a>, she\u2019s exploring the psychological effects of going to K-12 school in a language other than your first language. In the future, she hopes to be able to open her own counseling practice where she can help the Latinx\/Hispanic community access affordable mental health services.<\/p>\n<p>We look forward to accompanying Monica as her research unfolds!<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Congratulations to new McNair Scholar Monica Miranda!
