Jocie Torres<\/strong> is a first-generation student at Eastern Washington University, pursing a major in Psychology and a minor in Business. She is working toward getting her doctorate in Clinical Psychology and eventually opening her own independent practice specializing in therapy. She also hopes to work as a professor where she can build relationships with students who face difficulties as first-generation students.  Ultimately, Jocie plans to support first-generation students by creating a scholarship, while offering free guidance and services within her independent practice. She has found a passion in assisting others to provide a positive impact on people\u2019s lives and futures.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Jocie\u2019s research interests revolve around prioritizing psychologists’ mental health. She plans to investigate preventions and solutions to provide for the professionals whose jobs center around assisting others. She believes that maintaining a healthy mental state is a very important part of a healthy lifestyle, especially for those in the helping professions. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Apart from her professional aspirations, Jocie enjoys connecting with her loved ones and having long conversations with close friends. She enjoys learning new developments, taking risks, and enjoying what the moment has in store for her.<\/p>\n\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n

2025 EWU Faculty Research Mentor: <\/strong>Dr. Keely Hope<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Personal Therapy and Compassion Fatigue<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Abstract:<\/strong> Background. Compassion fatigue, a unique concern in caring professions, can lead to burnout, fatigue and exhaustion. This study aims to understand how participation in personal therapy is effective in mitigating compassion fatigue levels for professional counselors who practice as mental health professionals. Data is being collected from survey respondents who met the inclusion criteria of possessing a full license (i.e., those who can practice without supervision) or a provisional license (i.e., those who can practice under
supervision). Data stayed stored in surveymonkey, then downloaded onto a FERPA and HIPAA compliant shared drive. A total of 14 participants have responded so far The goal is a sample of at least 50. So far, data shows that many have participated in personal therapy one time during their career and have discussed their practice during that time. Data collection and analysis will be completed Fall 2025.<\/p>\n\n<\/div>\n\n
