2025 EWU Faculty Research Mentor: <\/strong>Dr. Timothy Hilton<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Research Title:\u00a0<\/strong> <\/em>Engaging homeless youth in services to reduce health and other risks<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Abstract:<\/strong> The homeless youth population has many vulnerabilities, including serious health risks. Young people who experience homelessness are at high risk for adverse outcomes such as mental health problems, experience of violence, early pregnancy, leaving school early, substance use, and early death. The purpose of this study is to identify promising strategies to engage youth in services to reduce health and other risks in the Spokane area. A review of the literature suggests that to be successful, services for this population need to be easily accessible, non-judgmental, convenient, and not require behavioral change nor other stipulations to receive services. Six services organizations serving homeless youth in Spokane were identified and the method will be to complete semi-structured interviews with 20 professional service providers at these organizations. Interviews will address perceptions of available services and gaps, resources and policies related to services for homeless youth, and opportunities for service improvements. The goal of this study will be to better inform the city of Spokane and service providers about strengths, needs, and challenges in serving this population.<\/p>\n\n<\/div>\n\n
