{"id":39,"date":"2019-09-09T16:15:31","date_gmt":"2019-09-09T23:15:31","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/inside.ewu.edu\/lmatos\/?page_id=39"},"modified":"2025-11-03T15:57:34","modified_gmt":"2025-11-03T23:57:34","slug":"teaching","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/inside.ewu.edu\/lmatos\/teaching\/","title":{"rendered":"Teaching"},"content":{"rendered":"<p data-start=\"163\" data-end=\"402\">I teach a variety of courses in the Biology Department; however, <em data-start=\"228\" data-end=\"254\">Fundamentals of Genetics<\/em> (BIOL 310), <em data-start=\"267\" data-end=\"286\">Molecular Biology<\/em> (BIOL 438), and the <em data-start=\"307\" data-end=\"329\">Biotechnology Series<\/em> (BIOL 485, 488, 489, and 490A) are the courses I teach most regularly.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"404\" data-end=\"725\">During my tenure at EWU, I have developed several specialized courses, including a capstone course in bioinformatics and a virology course (<em data-start=\"544\" data-end=\"554\">BIOL 432<\/em>). I also created <em data-start=\"572\" data-end=\"588\">Human Genetics<\/em> (currently <em data-start=\"600\" data-end=\"610\">BIOL 396<\/em>) as an elective designed to serve both biology majors and students from other disciplines across the university.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"727\" data-end=\"919\">In Fall 2018, I developed <em data-start=\"753\" data-end=\"775\">Molecular Biotechniques<\/em>, a hands-on laboratory course that has proven to be both engaging and enjoyable for students and for me. This course is now offered annually.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"921\" data-end=\"1392\">More recently, I designed two courses focused on biotechnology industry practices: <em data-start=\"1004\" data-end=\"1042\">Current Good Manufacturing Practices<\/em> (<em data-start=\"1044\" data-end=\"1054\">BIOL 383<\/em>) and <em data-start=\"1060\" data-end=\"1097\">Biotech Industry Regulatory Affairs<\/em> (<em data-start=\"1099\" data-end=\"1109\">BIOL 384<\/em>). These courses were developed in consultation with regional biotechnology industry partners and have been formally incorporated into the Bachelor of Science in Biotechnology curriculum.
