Adopting a Plus One Approach to Course Revision

March 14, 2019 by Johnson, James Leave a Comment

Course revision can be a difficult process, and can sometimes seems so big that the thought of
revising your course become paralyzing. Luckily, it doesn’t have to be this way! Suggested as a
way to implement Universal Design for Learning (UDL) principles in their book Reach Everyone,
Teach Everyone: Universal Design for Learning in Higher Education, authors Thomas J. Tobin
and Kirsten T. Behling argue that adopting a “Plus One Approach” will alleviate the stress and
strain of course revision by narrowing instructor focus and making an all-at-once approach an
iterative one (134).

Cover of book - Reach Everyone, Teach Everyone

The Plus One Approach is simple: first, identify the places in your course where students
struggle, have more questions than usual, or often need alternative explanations. After you’ve
identified these “pinch points,” try to find just one thing that you can add or revisie to alleviate
student stress in each of these points. (Some examples: provide an additional source, introduce
an element of choice, or provide access to lecture materials, notes, etc.)

The beautiful thing about the Plus One Approach is that it is flexible and timely–you can use it to
improve lecture materials, instruction, and assessment whenever you run into “pinch points” or
while revising a course at the end of a term. For more information about UDL, the Plus One
Approach, or any other help with course design, contact the Instructional Designers at
Instructional Technology!

Cloud-based solutions and Canvas

Logo for Microsoft OneDrive

Logo for Google Drive

Since the beginning of Winter Quarter 2019, many students and faculty have requested assistance in working with large presentation and multimedia types of files in Canvas.  Canvas limits file upload size to 500 megabytes – the equivalent of about 50 digital photos. Slideshows with multimedia, graphic intensive files, video recordings and specialty files such as ArcGIS (used in files with encoded geographical information) can easily exceed 500MB.  Instructional Technology staff encourage students and faculty to take advantage of EWU’s cloud-based storage solutions OneDrive and Google Drive for storing and managing access to large types of files. OneDrive is accessed ; Google Drive is accessed via https://drive.google.com.  Log in with your Eaglenet credentials.  Your EWU OneDrive has 1TB of available storage for all EWU users; your EWU Google Drive has unlimited available storage.

By default, everything uploaded to OneDrive and Google Drive starts out with private visibility – visible only to authenticated user.  To share large files, toggle the sharing settings which range from sharing with one specific user to creating a link that allows anyone with the link to view and download your large files:

  • Share OneDrive Files and Folders
  • Share Google Drive Files and Folders

Faculty tip!  When setting up an assignment for online submission, allow for URL as a submission type.  Students can submit a shareable link for those assignments that require large files.
