To fulfill this mission, our office provides a wide variety of services to the EWU community that help minimize the occurrence and risk of security incidents. We work closely with other higher education institutions, outside security organizations and researchers to keep informed of the latest information security trends.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">What We Do<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Our office performs the following functions:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Risk assessments<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Vulnerability scans and penetration tests on our campus systems.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Monitors our Intrusion Detection System and server\/firewall logs.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Intrusion\/security incident response.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Security Education &amp; Awareness training<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Develop security policies and guidelines<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Report an Incident<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Any EWU employee or student who knows, or reasonably suspects, that personal information owned, maintained, or used by EWU has been acquired by an unauthorized person, should immediately report it so that we can assess whether or not a breach notification is required.<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>For purposes of EWU, personal information includes any of the following:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Social security number or last four digits of a social security number;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Driver&#8217;s license number or similar identification number;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Any numbers or information (e.g. account number, credit or debit card number, security or access codes or passwords) that would permit access to an individual&#8217;s financial account;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Full date of birth;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Private key that is unique to an individual and that is used to authenticate or sign an electronic record;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Student, military, or passport identification number;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Any information about medical history, mental or physical condition, or about a health professional\u2019s medical diagnosis or treatment<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Biometric data<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>User name or email address in combination with a password or security questions and answers that would permit access to an online account.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>User name or email address in combination with a password or security questions and answers that would permit access to an online account<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Notes: Student identification numbers were added to this list effective March 1, 2020.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>If you suspect a security breach has&nbsp;<\/strong><strong>occurred<\/strong>:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Preserve Evidence<\/strong>: Avoid making any updates or other modifications to software, data, or equipment suspected to be involved<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Report the Incident<\/strong>:\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Complete this <a href=\"https:\/\/inside.ewu.edu\/it\/incident-reporting-form\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">web form<\/a>.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>If you need immediate assistance, call the IT Help Desk at 509-359-2247.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>If you cannot complete this form, contact:\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Colin Turnbull, Chief Information Security Officer<br>cturnbull at ewu dot edu<br>509-359-4985<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n<p>The university is required by <a href=\"https:\/\/app.leg.wa.gov\/RCW\/default.aspx?cite=42.56.590\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Washington State RCW 42.56.590<\/a>, other state laws, and federal regulations to report breaches involving personal and FERPA-protected data.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Reporting Phishing Emails:<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Please forward phishing emails to <a href=\"mailto:phishing@ewu.edu\">phishing@ewu.edu<\/a>.
