But how to balance work and creative pursuits? Luckily, Get Lit! has a panel for that: <a href=\"http:\/\/getlitfestival.org\/festival\/schedule\/\"><em>Writers Who Teach\/Teachers Who Write: Balancing Career and Creativity.<\/em><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Five writers\u2014Leyna Krow, Elliot Reed, Ben Cartwright, Dawn Pichon Barron, and Andy Lang\u2014have all managed to achieve what most of us dream of: day jobs plus writing careers. They have deigned to put themselves at our service so that we can pick them apart to ensure they\u2019re not automatons and discover how it is that they do what it is we want to do.<\/p>\n<p>Following is a little teaser intro to some of the mythical Writer\/Worker Beasts living among us.<\/p>\n<p>Ben Cartwright\u2019s poetry collection <a href=\"https:\/\/sagehillpoetry.com\/2016\/10\/26\/release-after-our-departure\/\"><em>After Our Departure<\/em><\/a> won the 2016 Powder Horn Prize and his latest collection, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.floatingbridgepress.org\/product\/the-meanest-things-pick-clean-coming-soon\/\"><em>The Meanest Things Pick Clean<\/em><\/a><em>, <\/em>was published in 2017. Though he now teaches at SFCC, Ben says that some of his best work has \u201chappened around waiting tables, doing demolition on buildings in Seattle, working long hours in a bakery tending ovens, in between serving drinks at bars, or while checking the math on annual total income annuity statements.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Leyna Krow\u2019s short story collection, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.amazon.com\/Fine-But-You-Appear-Sinking\/dp\/1943888086\"><em>I\u2019m Fine, But You Appear to Be Sinking<\/em><\/a><em>, <\/em>was picked as a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.huffingtonpost.com\/entry\/the-best-fiction-books-of-2017_us_5a26dfd7e4b069df71fa292c\">Huffington Post Best Fiction Book of 2017<\/a> and recently got a major thumbs up from <a href=\"https:\/\/www.believermag.com\/exclusives\/?read=believer_book_award_2017\">The Believer.<\/a> Leyna has been teaching for seven years and, lest she float off, leaving us lesser beings behind, she says she\u2019s grateful for a day job as it lends her \u201cSome structure and tether to the regular world.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Tin House Books is publishing Elliot Reed\u2019s debut novel, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.amazon.com\/Key-Treehouse-Living-Elliot-Reed\/dp\/1947793047\/ref=sr_1_1?s=books&amp;ie=UTF8&amp;qid=1522908794&amp;sr=1-1&amp;keywords=a+key+to+treehouse+living&amp;dpID=51B1o9O1RRL&amp;preST=_SY291_BO1,204,203,200_QL40_&amp;dpSrc=srch\"><em>A Key to Treehouse Living<\/em><\/a><em>, <\/em>and it will be available for purchase in our virtual and real shopping carts in September 2018.
