Programs

Hello, and long time, no blog! My name’s Genevieve and I’m an intern here at Get Lit! who tends to err on the side of exclamation points! I hope your 2018 has been off to a great start so far; I know ours has at the Get Lit! office. January puts us roughly three months away from the 2018 Get Lit! Festival and we could not be more excited for the events leading up to this year’s festival!

(Quick reminder: go get your planner, iCal app, or personal assistant and block out April 23-29. You’re going to be busy that week. You’ll be attending all of the incredible readings, book signings, and workshops we have planned for you!)

As I’m typing this, it’s Thursday morning, January 18th, and all I can think about right now is the visiting writer we have coming to Spokane tomorrow night at Auntie’s Bookstore. Jesse Graves is a phenomenal poet and I’m excited to hear him read from his poetry collection, Basin Ghosts, which examines life in the rural South. I’m not from the rural South, I’m from rural Missouri, but I’m sure his poems will still sound like home to me. If you’ve only ever lived in the PNW, you should attend the reading tomorrow night and get a taste of what you’ve been missing. (A cacophony of cicadas and bullfrogs on muggy summer nights, mostly. It’s more charming than it sounds, I promise.)

As for what else we’ve been up to, back in November I helped emcee our very first (and second) Harry Potter Trivia Night and it was a BLAST! In fact, the first HP Trivia Night (which had two sessions) sold out in only a few hours, so we created a second trivia night to accommodate the massive hordes of Spokane Harry Potter nerds, which are, arguably, the best kind of massive nerd horde. Thank you, Spokanites, for coming out to The Gilded Unicorn and Iron Goat to support Get Lit! last November!

The trivia nights were so successful, that we’re going to make it a series! If you’re a LOTR fan (The Lord of the Rings for the acronym-challenged) keep checking our website, Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram, for specific dates and times, but right now it looks like our next trivia night(s) will be sometime in March, themed on LOTR books! While I’m at it, if you have any suggestions for literary-themed trivia nights you’d like to see in the future, please send us an e-mail (getlit@ewu.edu) with your ideas and we’ll see what we can do!

If you haven’t been hiding under a rock for the past few weeks, you’ve probably heard that Get Lit! is bringing Anne Lamott to Spokane in April! Anne Lamott is a brilliant and poised author, one that I admire and look up to as a writer. I am super excited to attend her event at the Bing Crosby Theater in a few months, (we’ll make announcements soon so that everyone knows exactly when tickets will be going on sale) but I’m also really excited to have the opportunity to meet the other writers and artists at the 40+ in Spokane and Cheney during the festival week. The writers I am definitely not going to miss are: Brit Bennett, Maggie Smith, Lilliam Rivera, and Bryant Terry! Again, keep up with our website, Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram to see all the latest news on the incredible writers coming to Spokane in April!!

Ta ta for now! ~ Genevieve

Happy New (Festival) Year from Get Lit!
