The <em>San Francisco Chronicle<\/em> has called Quinones \u201cthe most original writer on Mexico and the border out there,\u201d while the <em>Los Angeles Times<\/em> says, \u201cOver the last 15 years he has filed the best dispatches about Mexican migration and its effects on the United States bar none.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>From 2004-2014, Quinones reported for the <em>LA Times <\/em>on immigration, drugs, and gangs. His first two books, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.auntiesbooks.com\/book\/9780826322968\"><em>True Tales from Another Mexico <\/em><\/a>and <a href=\"http:\/\/www.auntiesbooks.com\/book\/9780826342553\"><em>Antonio\u2019s Gun and Delfino\u2019s Dream<\/em><\/a> are collections of nonfiction stories about Mexico and Mexican immigration to the U.S. Quinones\u2019 most recent work, however, has a different focus.<\/p>\n<p><em><a href=\"http:\/\/getlitfestival.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/02\/51pEBowSD9L._SX327_BO1204203200_.jpg\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-2649\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-2649 alignright\" src=\"http:\/\/getlitfestival.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/02\/51pEBowSD9L._SX327_BO1204203200_-198x300.jpg\" alt=\"51pEBowSD9L._SX327_BO1,204,203,200_\" width=\"198\" height=\"300\" \/><\/a><a href=\"http:\/\/www.auntiesbooks.com\/book\/9781620402504\">Dreamland: The True Tales of America\u2019s Opiate Epidemic<\/a><\/em> examines how Purdue Pharma\u2019s 1990s marketing campaign for the expensive\u2014 and extremely addictive\u2014 opioid painkiller Oxycotin contributed to our country\u2019s current heroin epidemic. In the book, Quinones profiles people from all walks of life\u2014 pharma pioneers, young Mexican entrepreneurs, narcotics investigators, survivors, and parents\u2014and shows how one of the biggest public health disasters of our time came about. <em>Dreamland <\/em>was named a Best Book of the 2015 by<em> The Daily Beast, The Seattle Times, The Boston Globe, The Guardian<\/em>, and a number of other publications. It was a finalist for the National Book Critics Circle Award, and <em>Publishers Weekly <\/em>called it \u201cFascinating . . . a harrowing, eye-opening look at two sides of the same coin, the legal and illegal faces of addictive painkillers and their insidious power.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>More info in the EWU Colloquium on Mexico can be found <a href=\"http:\/\/global.ewu.edu\/features\/events\/colloquium-mexico),\">here<\/a>, but to me as a writing student, the Quinones reading is what stands out to me.
