SUMMARY:No Such Thing as a Bad Idea: A Craft Class with Leah Sottile
DESCRIPTION:When it comes to enterprise journalism and creative nonfiction\, the most memorable stories can be based on ideas no editor in their right mind would accept. In this workshop\, freelance journalist Leah Sottile will walk students through several stories her own editors raised their eyebrows at\, but that evolved into some of her most memorable pieces of work. Afterward\, attendees of this workshop will discuss their own weird ideas they’ve brought to the workshop\, and together we’ll create a toolbox that will help you figure out where to take the idea next\, how to get started on research and how to create a pitch that can help sell the idea. \nThis class is ticketed ($35 plus fees) and capped at 35 attendees. Buy tickets here! *Tickets will go on sale Monday\, March 20th at 8am. \n*This class is located in Events A on the first floor of the Spokane Central Library.

SUMMARY:The Write Question: A Live Podcast Recording with Lauren Korn and Lisa Wells
DESCRIPTION:Take a sneak peek behind the mic with Montana Public Radio’s Lauren Korn when she interviews Believers author Lisa Wells for a future episode of The Write Question—MTPR’s radio program and podcast “featuring authors from the American West and beyond!” Now in its sixteenth season\, The Write Question has broadcast over 800 author interviews\, hosted by the podcast’s creator\, Chérie Newman (2007-2017); her successor\, writer Sarah Aronson (2017-2020); and now by the former Director of the Montana Book Festival\, Lauren Korn (2020-present). \nThe featured title: Like most of us\, Lisa Wells has spent years overwhelmed by increasingly urgent news of climate change on an apocalyptic scale. She did not need to be convinced of the stakes\, but she could not find practical answers. She embarked on a pilgrimage\, seeking wisdom and paths to action from outliers and visionaries\, pragmatists and iconoclasts. Believers tracks through the lives of these people who are dedicated to repairing the earth and seemingly undaunted by the task ahead. \n*This session is FREE but seating is extremely limited (8 attendees only) and so we will be running a contest for a chance to win! Those wishing to attend this event will need to enter our online giveaway. There are two ways to enter: 1.) Email us at getlit@ewu.edu with the subject line “Contest” and you will be entered\, Or 2.) Follow us on Instagram and find instructions on our contest post. Winners will be notified April 1st and will also receive a prize pack from Montana Public Radio!

SUMMARY:How to Start a Poem: A Craft Class with Ada Limón
DESCRIPTION:Making Something from Nothing: How to Start a Poem with Ada Limón \nJoin us for an extremely rare and exciting opportunity to learn how to create a poem from scratch in this intimate craft class taught by the current US Poet Laureate Ada Limón. Ada’s role as Poet Laureate is to “raise the national consciousness to a greater appreciation of the reading and writing of poetry.” In this class\, which can be attended by poets at any stage of their writing career\, Ada will address the daunting task of beginning a poem with a blank page—how do you find inspiration? How do you know what you want to say? How do you create emotionally charged imagery that will make readers want to return to your poetry again and again? Carla Hayden\, Librarian of Congress\, who appoints the poet laureate\, said that “Ada’s accessible\, engaging poems ground us in where we are and who we share our world with. They speak of intimate truths\, of the beauty and heartbreak that is living\, in ways that help us move forward.” Don’t miss this incredible opportunity to spend two hours learning about poetry from our US Poet Laureate and festival headliner Ada Limón! \nThis craft class is ticketed ($45 plus fees) and capped at 50 attendees. Purchase your ticket here! ***This event has sold out! Thank you to everyone who has purchased tickets!*** \n*This class is located in Events A on the first floor of the Spokane Central Library.

SUMMARY:Women Writing in Full Color
DESCRIPTION:Join writers CMarie Fuhrman\, Toni Jensen\, and Jane Wong as they celebrate and interrogate their individuality and identity against the backdrop of history\, expectations\, and reality. Their poetry and prose challenge reader’s expectations and examine the impact of race and culture on their lives and writing. Jensen explores gun violence\, land\, and the lives of Indigenous women in her memoir-in-essays\, Carry. Wong wrestles with Chinese immigrant life in the US and explores her own identity in both her poetry collection and her forthcoming memoir Meet Me Tonight in Atlantic City\, and Furhman\, the 2021-2023 Idaho Writer in Residence and author of Camped Beneath the Dam\, meditates on land and body while bearing witness to the challenges faced by underrepresented voices. Fuhrman\, Jensen\, and Wong will each give a reading of their own work and discuss how their backgrounds and identities influence and inform their writing. The work of these writers is all celebrated in Nonwhite and Woman: 131 Micro Essays on Being in the World\, an anthology which “. . . celebrates how women of color live and thrive in the world\, and how they make their lives their own.” The anthology (along with all authors’ books) will be available for purchase at the event via Auntie’s Bookstore. We would like to thank Spokane Public Library for their partnership. \n This event is free and open to the public\, no ticket is required.
