DESCRIPTION:This is a Spokane Public Library event. \nTuesday\, January 23rd at 5:30pm at Central Library — Event Rooms A & B combined\n(906 W Main Ave). \n\nAbout the event \nSpokane Public Library’s Writing Education Specialist\, Sharma Shields\, will converse with celebrated Northwest novelists Sonora Jha and Jess Walter about their recent publications. Auntie’s Bookstore will be there to sell copies of the author’s titles following the presentation. This event is free. \n  \nAbout the authors \nSonora Jha is the author of the novels Foreign (2013) and the memoir How To Raise A Feminist Son (2021). Her latest novel The Laughter has earned rave reviews from The New York Times\, The New Yorker\, India Today\, and The Seattle Times and received starred reviews from Kirkus Reviews\, Booklist\, Bookpage and others. It is longlisted for the Aspen Words Literary Prize. Sonora was formerly a journalist covering crime\, politics\, and culture for the Times of India and for East Magazine\, Singapore. She moved to the United States to earn a Ph.D. in Political Communication. Dr. Jha’s OpEds\, essays\, and public appearances have featured in The New York Times\, on BBC\, and in several anthologies. She is a professor of journalism at Seattle University and also teaches creative writing for Hugo House\, Hedgebrook Writers’ Retreat\, Creative Nonfiction\, and Seattle Public Library. \nJess Walter has won the Washington State Book Award (The Cold Millions)\, twice won the Pacific Northwest Booksellers Award (for The Zero and We Live in Water)\, and was a finalist for the L.A. Times Book Prize (The Zero) and the PEN/USA Award in both fiction (The Zero) and nonfiction (Every Knee Shall Bow). His novel Beautiful Ruins was a #1 New York Times bestseller and spent more than a year on the bestseller list. It was also Esquire’s Book of the Year and NPR Fresh Air’s Novel of the Year. The Financial Lives of the Poets was Time Magazine’s #2 novel of the year and Walter’s story collection\, We Live in Water\, was longlisted for the Story Prize and the Frank O’Connor Short Story Award. Walter’s latest is the story collection The Angel of Rome.
