SUMMARY:Northwest Passages Presents: "The Strange Beautiful" by Carla Crujido
DESCRIPTION:Carla Crujido has created a riveting\, magical collection of short stories centered around the Mount Vernon Apartments in Spokane. Inspired by family lore and a little help from an actual advertisement found in The Spokesman-Review\, these short stories take a look into the lives of ten tenants over a hundred years.  \nThis is a Northwest Passages event with Carla Crujido for her new book\, The Strange Beautiful. \nTuesday\, January 16th at 7pm at The Spokesman-Review Chronicle Pavilion – 7th Floor\n(999 W Riverside Ave). Doors open at 6:30pm. \nAuntie’s will be there with copies of The Strange Beautiful for purchase. \n\nGeneral Admission tickets are $7. Seating will be limited and is on a first-come\, first-serve basis. Doors open at 6:30pm \nTickets can be purchased online at spokane7tickets. \n  \nAbout the book \nIn a series of interlinked stories that span from 1918 to the present day\, this surreal\, folklore-inspired book shows us the lives of ten tenants in an apartment building in Spokane\, Washington. Among them\, we meet a homesick musician struggling with an unusual addiction; a department store mannequin living as a flesh-and-blood woman; and a mother and daughter hosting tea parties for an unlikely guest. These quiet\, emotionally fraught tales explore our unseen connections to strangers and the cyclical nature of our collective stories.\nAbout the author \nCarla Crujido is the Nonfiction Editor at River Styx Magazine. She holds an MFA in Creative Writing from the Institute of American Indian Arts and has had work published in Crazyhorse\, Yellow Medicine Review\, Ricepaper Magazine\, Tinfish Press\, The Ana\, and elsewhere. She lives in the Pacific Northwest. \n  \n\n\n\n\nEvent address:\n\n\n\nThe Spokesman-Review Chronicle Pavilion\n999 W Riverside Ave\, 7th Floor\n\nSpokane\, WA 99201
