{"id":35444,"date":"2024-04-10T09:08:21","date_gmt":"2024-04-10T16:08:21","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/inside.ewu.edu\/generaleducation\/?page_id=35444"},"modified":"2026-08-11T16:52:14","modified_gmt":"2026-08-11T23:52:14","slug":"first-year-seminars","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/inside.ewu.edu\/generaleducation\/first-year-seminars\/","title":{"rendered":"First Year Seminars"},"content":{"rendered":"<div class=\"gb-container gb-container-16d6d0ca\"><div class=\"gb-inside-container\">\n\n<p>The mission of First Year Seminars at EWU is to support students in making a successful transition from high school into higher education through intentional conscious decisions about their academic pathway forward.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Things that you can expect from a First Year Seminar:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Hands-on, experiential and\/or service or community-based learning activities<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Introduction to an interest area before taking major\/discipline related courses<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Development of study skills you will need for college<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Building connections with faculty and students interested in the same area as you<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>First Year Seminars will also fulfill one of your Breadth Area Core Requirements (BACR) for graduation! <\/p>\n\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n<div class=\"gb-container gb-container-a6a14aab\"><div class=\"gb-inside-container\">\n\n\n<div class=\"gb-container gb-container-b8ea20bb gb-accordion\">\n<div class=\"gb-container gb-container-fc47554a gb-accordion__item\" data-transition=\"slide\">\n\n\n<div id=\"gb-accordion-content-691e05dd\" class=\"gb-accordion__content\"><div class=\"gb-container gb-container-691e05dd\">\n\n\n\n<\/div><\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n<div class=\"gb-container gb-container-25d6b18c gb-accordion__item\" data-transition=\"slide\">\n\n\n<div id=\"gb-accordion-content-d65aea4f\" class=\"gb-accordion__content\"><div class=\"gb-container gb-container-d65aea4f\">\n\n<p><strong>Tuesday and Thursday 1pm -3:20pm<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In this class we will read many examples of comics&#8211;from single-panel stories to full-length books&#8211;as we examine how visual narratives work. We will learn techniques for creating our own comics, including methods for telling fantastical stories and realistic autobiographies. Along the way, we will track the evolution of comics from superhero stories to diverse, genre-bending narratives&#8211;hopefully exploding our assumptions about what constitutes &#8220;good&#8221; comics. We will draw on paper every class session, practicing the general concepts of visual communication, although no prior artistic experience is required. Rather, you must have a growth mindset for this course, and be ready to surprise yourself by what you create.<\/p>\n\n<\/div><\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n<div class=\"gb-container gb-container-cb5d8761 gb-accordion__item\" data-transition=\"slide\">\n\n\n<div id=\"gb-accordion-content-5a34e8a0\" class=\"gb-accordion__content\"><div class=\"gb-container gb-container-5a34e8a0\">\n\n<p><strong>Monday and Wednesday 9-11:20am<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This course combines a focus on student success skills with academic content in the Humanities breadth area designed to develop critical inquiry skills. The FYE consists of a pair of courses that are linked by a single problem or text and approached by each distinct discipline.<\/p>\n\n<\/div><\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n<div class=\"gb-container gb-container-ad5fb0b8 gb-accordion__item\" data-transition=\"slide\">\n\n\n<div id=\"gb-accordion-content-fcac6685\" class=\"gb-accordion__content\"><div class=\"gb-container gb-container-fcac6685\">\n\n<p><strong>Tuesday and Wednesday 1-1:50pm; Thursday 1-2:50pm; and Friday 12-3:50pm<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This course combines a focus on student success skills with academic content in the Natural Science breadth area designed to develop critical inquiry skills.
