The weeklong series of events has been a staple of EWU\u2019s culture since 2012. Lisa was active in Eastern\u2019s graduate chapter of Zeta, Pi Xi Zeta, under the tutelage of her sorority sister and friend, Angela Jones. Lisa worked at Eastern\u2019s KEWU-FM radio station as an on-air talent, where she developed a love for public relations and publicity; afterward, Lisa moved to Maryland, where she lived in Baltimore City for 15 years and earned her Master\u2019s in Public Relations from the University of Maryland.<br>Upon returning to Spokane, Lisa assumed the Director of Communications and Community Engagement role for the Spokane City Council, the same council for which her grandmother once ran for office over 35 years ago. Lisa has demonstrated her commitment to her community by actively participating in several nonprofit organizations focused on empowerment, such as Take Up the Cause, TakeAll Foundation, and the Spokane chapter of The Links. LaRae earned her BAs in History and Education from Eastern Washington University in 1988 and 1990 and is a certified teacher. From 2003 through 2021, LaRae learned n\u0313s\u0259l\u0313xc\u030cin\u0313 (Colville-Okanagan Salish) as an apprentice to the late master speaker S\u0295amti\u0301c\u0313a\u0294 (Sarah) Peterson of the Lower Similkameen Indian Band. The n\u0313s\u0259l\u0313xc\u030cin\u0313 language was moribund (no children raised in the language) for 90 years in LaRae\u2019s family until, when she was in her late 30s, she made the commitment to bring the language back to her family and community. LaRae&#8217;s passion for learning and teaching her highly endangered Indigenous language culminated in the foundation of SSOS in 2009. SSOS is a non-profit organization that operates Salish immersion childcare, preschool center, and K-8 schooling programs while training new fluent adult speakers of n\u0313s\u0259l\u0313xc\u030cin\u0313. LaRae\u2019s was the recipient of the 2023 Luce Indigenous Knowledge Fellowship, and also in 2023 was named a Woman of the Year by the Spokesman Review in Spokane.<br><br>Christopher Parkin is the Principal and Business Manager at Salish School of Spokane. Chris holds undergraduate degrees in Spanish and Social Studies Education from Eastern Washington University, and he is an advanced speaker of N\u0313s\u0259l\u0313xc\u030cin\u0313 (Colville Salish). Chris is a leading expert in Salish language revitalization and curriculum development and is the co-designer and co-author of the materials that make up the Indigenous Language Fluency Transfer System (ILFTS) that has been developed for n\u0313s\u0259l\u0313xc\u030cin\u0313 and its sister language, n\u0313se\u0301lis\u030ccn\u0313 (Spokane-Kalispel Salish). He acts as a consultant for other indigenous communities who are working to revitalize their languages. Chris speaks n\u0313s\u0259l\u0313xc\u030cin\u0313 with his two children and five grandchildren.
