To tell if it is safe to spend time outside, consult an Air Quality Index (AQI).<!--more--><\/p>\n<p>The AQI is a number from 0 to 500; the number increases along with the amount of air pollution. These numbers are then grouped into levels of health concern.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_6136\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-6136\" style=\"width: 658px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\" wp-image-6136\" src=\"https:\/\/inside.ewu.edu\/ehs\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/116\/2018\/08\/AQI-table.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"668\" height=\"303\" srcset=\"https:\/\/inside.ewu.edu\/ehs\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/116\/2018\/08\/AQI-table.jpg 826w, https:\/\/inside.ewu.edu\/ehs\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/116\/2018\/08\/AQI-table-300x136.jpg 300w, https:\/\/inside.ewu.edu\/ehs\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/116\/2018\/08\/AQI-table-768x349.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 668px) 100vw, 668px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-6136\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Table from airnow.gov<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<ul>\n<li>&#8220;Moderate&#8221; means the air pollution may cause respiratory symptoms for people who are very sensitive.<\/li>\n<li>&#8220;Unhealthy for Sensitive Groups&#8221; means that the general public is unlikely to be affected but people with lung or heart disease, older adults, and children could have respiratory symptoms.<\/li>\n<li>&#8220;Unhealthy&#8221; means anyone could experience respiratory symptoms and sensitive groups may have more serious effects.<\/li>\n<li>&#8220;Very Unhealthy&#8221; means everyone could experience serious health effects.<\/li>\n<li>&#8220;Hazardous&#8221; means emergency conditions and the entire population is likely to be affected.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Two AQI resources are\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/airnow.gov\/index.cfm?action=airnow.main\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">airnow.gov<\/a> and the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.spokanecleanair.org\/air-quality\/air-monitoring-2\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Spokane Regional Clean Air Agency<\/a> which has an air quality measuring station at <a href=\"https:\/\/www.spokanecleanair.org\/monitor\/3\/turnbull-wildlife-refuge\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Turnbull Wildlife Refuge<\/a>.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Regional forest fires are causing a haze in the air.
