{"id":35956,"date":"2024-05-23T09:31:50","date_gmt":"2024-05-23T16:31:50","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/inside.ewu.edu\/ehs\/?page_id=35956"},"modified":"2024-09-25T10:52:35","modified_gmt":"2024-09-25T17:52:35","slug":"occupational-medicine","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/inside.ewu.edu\/ehs\/occupational-health-safety\/occupational-medicine\/","title":{"rendered":"Occupational Medicine"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image alignleft\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"300\" height=\"300\" src=\"https:\/\/in.ewu.edu\/ehs\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/116\/2017\/02\/medical-symbol-300x300.jpeg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-1097\" srcset=\"https:\/\/inside.ewu.edu\/ehs\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/116\/2017\/02\/medical-symbol-300x300.jpeg 300w, https:\/\/inside.ewu.edu\/ehs\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/116\/2017\/02\/medical-symbol-150x150.jpeg 150w, https:\/\/inside.ewu.edu\/ehs\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/116\/2017\/02\/medical-symbol-768x768.jpeg 768w, https:\/\/inside.ewu.edu\/ehs\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/116\/2017\/02\/medical-symbol-1024x1024.jpeg 1024w, https:\/\/inside.ewu.edu\/ehs\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/116\/2017\/02\/medical-symbol.jpeg 1500w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Occupational Medical Monitoring and Testing<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>An Occupational Medical Monitoring Program is required by law, for the workplace that has job assignments that involve working in potentially hazardous conditions.&nbsp; It is also required for job assignments that include work with specific chemicals, substances, or hazardous materials.&nbsp; An Occupational Medical Monitoring Program involves medical monitoring and testing that is generally used to determine and track the health of employees working with specific chemicals, substances, or physical hazards and to evaluate and monitor potential exposure to employees who perform work in hazardous conditions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Occupational medical examinations and testing are required to be conducted to identify health effects or exposures that require further follow-up. &nbsp;Improvements to work practices, engineering controls, or personal protective equipment may be necessary to limit exposures. &nbsp;The type of occupational medical monitoring depends on a number of factors including, but not limited to, the chemical, substances, or physical hazards the employee is working with, the number of days per year the employee works with or is exposed to the materials, and the types of functions performed by the employee.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Initial \/Baseline Occupational Medical Evaluations and Vaccinations<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Initial baseline occupational medical evaluations are required for some individuals at Eastern. Positions that require occupational medical evaluations are based on the essential functional analysis for the job. Jobs that involve tasks below may require participation in the occupational medicine program:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>medium to heavy work activity and stamina<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>work with&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/inside.ewu.edu\/ehs\/occupational-health-safety\/occupational-medicine\/#hazards\">specific hazardous chemicals, substances, and materials<\/a>;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>require the use of a&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/inside.ewu.edu\/ehs\/occupational-health-safety\/occupational-medicine\/#respirator\">respirator<\/a>;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>require a&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/inside.ewu.edu\/ehs\/occupational-health-safety\/occupational-medicine\/#cdl\">commercial driver license<\/a>;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>involve&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/inside.ewu.edu\/ehs\/occupational-health-safety\/occupational-medicine\/#noise\">noise exposure<\/a>; and\/or<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>work with&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/inside.ewu.edu\/ehs\/occupational-health-safety\/occupational-medicine\/#animal\">live animals<\/a>.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>The occupational medical evaluations are designed to obtain baseline medical information, to determine if an individual is physically able to do the tasks necessary for the job; and\/or to determine if an individual is medically able to use specific safety equipment.&nbsp; Individuals may need to complete an occupational medical evaluation questionnaire&nbsp;as part of the medical examination process.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Anyone with occupational exposure to bloodborne pathogens&nbsp;(<a href=\"http:\/\/apps.leg.wa.gov\/WAC\/default.aspx?cite=296-823&amp;full=true\">WAC 296-823<\/a>)&nbsp;is offered the&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/inside.ewu.edu\/ehs\/occupational-health-safety\/occupational-medicine\/#hepBvac\">Hepatitis B vaccine<\/a>, at no charge.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-center has-medium-font-size\"><strong>EH&amp;S determines the need for occupational medical evaluation(s) on a position by position basis.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:1em\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-text-color has-ewu-medium-gray-color has-alpha-channel-opacity has-ewu-medium-gray-background-color has-background\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Regulated Hazardous Chemicals, Carcinogens, and Materials<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:1em\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n<div class=\"gb-grid-wrapper gb-grid-wrapper-fed8b8da\">\n<div class=\"gb-grid-column gb-grid-column-540f783f\"><div class=\"gb-container href=\"https:\/\/inside.ewu.edu\/ehs\/occupational-health-safety\/ppe\/#lungs\">Respirators<\/a><\/h2>\n\n\n<div class=\"gb-grid-wrapper gb-grid-wrapper-e0ec1f13\">\n<div class=\"gb-grid-column gb-grid-column-032b4b4f\"><div class=\"gb-container gb-container-032b4b4f\">\n\n<p>Every employee who needs a respirator for their job must have occupational medical monitoring to ensure they are medically able to wear a respirator. DOT Physical Examinations are required every two years unless an employee has certain medical conditions which would require more frequent testing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Random drug and alcohol testing is required&nbsp;to maintain a CDL.<\/p>\n\n<\/div><\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<div style=\"height:1em\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-text-color has-ewu-medium-gray-color has-alpha-channel-opacity has-ewu-medium-gray-background-color has-background\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><a href=\"https:\/\/inside.ewu.edu\/ehs\/occupational-health-safety\/occupational-medicine\/noise-exposure-hearing-protection\/\">Noise Exposure<\/a><\/h2>\n\n\n<div class=\"gb-grid-wrapper gb-grid-wrapper-e2503d44\">\n<div class=\"gb-grid-column gb-grid-column-b64b1fea\"><div class=\"gb-container gb-container-b64b1fea\">\n\n<p>Baseline audiometric examinations are required for all employees whose work involves noise exposure greater than or equal to 85 dBA&nbsp;averaged over an eight hour period. All employees subject to this level of noise will be provided hearing protection to be worn during their job.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Audiometric exams are required annually as long as the employee continues to be exposed to high noise levels. It is offered, free of charge, to employees with potential exposure to&nbsp;<a href=\"http:\/\/inside.ewu.edu\/ehs\/laboratories-and-shops\/bio-safety-2\/#bbp_lab\">bloodborne pathogens<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Anyone who has already had the vaccination (many people received it as children) or who does not want the vaccination must fill out a&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/in.ewu.edu\/ehs\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/116\/2017\/02\/HepBDeclinationForm3FF.pdf\">Hepatitis B Declination form<\/a>&nbsp;and return it to EH&amp;S.
