No matter what the job is, the goal is to make sure that you are safe, comfortable, and less prone to work-related injuries.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Ergonomic issues are not exclusive to office environments; risk factors are found in jobs requiring repetitive, forceful, or prolonged exertion of the hands; frequent or heavy lifting, pushing, pulling, or carrying of heavy objects, and prolonged awkward postures. An improper ergonomic environment can lead to injury, lost time and production and increased worker compensation claims.<\/p>\n\n<\/div><\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<div style=\"height:1em\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-text-color has-ewu-medium-gray-color has-alpha-channel-opacity has-ewu-medium-gray-background-color has-background\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">General Ergonomic Tips<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>The basic idea behind ergonomics is to try and keep the body in a neutral position and not to remain in the same place for too long.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"gb-grid-wrapper gb-grid-wrapper-6c7d68e1\">\n<div class=\"gb-grid-column gb-grid-column-274411b1\"><div class=\"gb-container gb-container-274411b1\">\n\n<p>Keep your body in a neutral position:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Avoid frequent twisting, bending, arching, and reaching.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>When sitting or standing, maintain good posture.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Try to keep wrists flat, not bent up or down, while working.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Remember to move:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Try to alternate your tasks so that you aren&#8217;t doing one thing for a long period of time.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>If you spend a lot of your day sitting, make sure you stand up for a few minutes every hour:\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Walk to your coworker&#8217;s office instead of calling or emailing them.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Use the bathroom or drinking fountain on a different floor.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Lean back in your chair if you are having a phone conversation<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n<div class=\"gb-grid-column gb-grid-column-4b49243c\"><div class=\"gb-container gb-container-4b49243c\">\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image aligncenter\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.umsystem.edu\/totalrewards\/wellness\/activity_and_break_apps\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"100\" height=\"127\" src=\"https:\/\/in.ewu.edu\/ehs\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/116\/2017\/02\/small-clock.png\" alt=\"image of an alarm clock\" class=\"wp-image-1871\" title=\"small clock\"\/><\/a><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading has-text-align-center\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.umsystem.edu\/totalrewards\/wellness\/activity_and_break_apps\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Break Reminders<\/a><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-center\">There are several programs designed to remind people to take frequent short breaks. Finger and wrist problems are common for individuals who work in the lab. Laboratory work also frequently involves standing or sitting with the body in awkward positions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Ergonomic laboratory equipment can help reduce the amount of pressure needed to operate equipment and ergonomic equipment set-up can help prevent muscle problems created by awkward body positions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>When working in the lab, remember to take breaks and stretch out muscles that are being frequently used.
